It is the purpose of the Dias y Flores Garden to provide a green, beautiful, restful, safe and congenial space for gardeners to garden and for the community to enjoy. The garden will be open to the community as often as possible and will also serve as a public space for community meetings and other community functions. In Addition, we are also committed to maintaining and growing our associations

with neighbourhood organizations, from local schools to health clinics and encourage their use of the garden. We also offer many series of free classes through the summer from tai chi and yoga to horticulture, drawing, painting, writing, ecology and herbal sciences.

Milkw**d doesnโ€™t just raise monarch caterpillarsโ€”it kills invasive lanternflies.

Monarchs can eat milkw**d safely, storing its chemicals like living armor that makes them unappealing to predators. Lanternflies? Studies show 60โ€“80% die within 24 hours of contact with common milkw**d (SARE Project LNE25-494R).

That matters when lanternflies are costing the U.S. hundreds of millions in crop damage every year.

One plant, two missions: feeding monarchs and fighting pests. Sometimes, the best pest control is already blooming in your garden. ๐ŸŒฟ๐Ÿฆ‹๐Ÿ’€

In 1960, David Latimer planted a spiderwort sprout inside of a large glass bottle, added a quarter pint of water, and then sealed it shut. He opened the bottle 12 years later in 1972 to add some water and then sealed it for good. The self contained ecosystem has flourished for more than 60 years. For those who are wondering how this is even possible: the garden is a perfectly balanced and self-sufficient ecosystem. The bacteria in the compost eats the dead plants and breaks down the oxygen that is released by the plants, turning it into carbon dioxide, which is needed for photosynthesis. The bottle is essentially a microcosm of earth.
