The NY City Council just released their FY26 preliminary budget response, and it includes $1.5 million for spay/neuter services for pet owners and TNR volunteers, and $1 million to pilot a pet food bank for low-income families. This is terrific news toward curbing the overpopulation of unwanted pets needing homes!
This could be a big step toward making NYC more humane and affordable — but the funding isn't guaranteed so please write to your City Council member and encourage them to support these initiatives and maybe add a personal message about why this matters to you and why they should fight for it during budget negotiations.
