October is Down Syndrome Awareness Month, and we’re celebrating the voices, strengths, interests, and experiences of individuals like Soha! 💙💛

Soha is an individual we support at our Queens Day Habilitation Program, she says she has “fun every day,” with opportunities to draw, go outside in her community, and take part in activities she enjoys!

This month and throughout the year, we celebrate people with Down syndrome at Birch and in the community and support their right to be included, heard, and valued.

At our schools, we invite families to take part in meaningful cultural celebrations that connect home, school, and community.

For Hispanic Heritage Month, families at our Pelham Bay Early Childhood Center selected flags to represent and celebrate Hispanic cultures and heritage. Their participation helped make this celebration an opportunity to learn together, honor cultural traditions, and strengthen connections within our school community.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and throughout the month, we’re highlighting the talents, accomplishments, and career journeys of individuals in Birch’s programs! 💼

Today, meet Shira! Through our New Frontier program, Shira worked with Job Developer Olivia Cannon to strengthen her interview skills, buildher confidence, and pursue work that matched her interests. In May, she started a new job at Trader Joe’s, where she enjoys helping customers and working alongside her colleagues.

“Being a part of a team is good for me,” Shira shared.

Now, Shira is building on her accomplishments, setting new goals, and taking the lead in her journey toward greater independence.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM)! đź’Ľ

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” highlights the contributions people with disabilities make to our workplaces and communities.

Through Birch’s New Frontier program, we support adults with autism and developmental disabilities in building workplace skills, pursuing meaningful employment, and growing in their careers. By working alongside individuals and employers, we help create opportunities that reflect each person’s strengths, interests, and goals.

This October and throughout the year, join us in celebrating workers with disabilities and expanding access to employment!

Disability Voting Rights Week may be over, but the conversation continues!

Individuals at our Brooklyn Day Habilitation program learned about their voting rights, why their voice and their vote matters, and how to vote, continuing an important conversation about making informed choices and having a voice in the decisions that shape their communities.
