Felt Education

Felt Education Felt Education is a grassroots education nonprofit by women for women. We work with immigrants and refugees from over 20 countries.

Felt provides FREE English classes to those who cannot, for whatever reason, access traditional education. Felt Education aims to promote cross-cultural education and understanding through our unique attributes, talents and skills. We will engage groups of immigrants, marginalized women and youth who seek to learn more about their adopted home to feel safer and empowered. This organization will be

a two-way street: We will encourage women of every culture to share, teach and learn from each other. This it how it should be, because this is our America. This approach of learning by sharing will empower and embolden all involved and lead to a deeper understanding and connection for all. We’ve chosen to spell our name with a lower-case “e” because Fe stands for iron on the elemental chart and “iron” stands for strength. There is strength in friendship, in unity, in numbers, all of which will be present and promoted in our group.

In honor of both Women's History Month and World Poetry Day (3/21), our next woman who inspires us is the poet, Emma Lazarus. She was born on July 22, 1849 in New York City. As a writer and activist, Emma Lazarus has been widely recognized for her work. However, she is most famous for her poem, “The New Colossus,” that is engraved at the base of the Statue of Liberty in New York Harbor:

"Not like the brazen giant of Greek fame,
With conquering limbs astride from land to land;
Here at our sea-washed, sunset gates shall stand
A mighty woman with a torch, whose flame
Is the imprisoned lightning, and her name
Mother of Exiles. From her beacon-hand
Glows world-wide welcome; her mild eyes command
The air-bridged harbor that twin cities frame.
"Keep, ancient lands, your storied pomp!" cries she
With silent lips. "Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free,
The wretched refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!"
