"On August 31, the inaugural kindergarten class of girls skipped through the doors of Kwenda Collegiate Girls. When first graders joined them on September 2, the school welcomed 120 students in all, beginning the creation of what Founder Christina Yi-Perry calls “beautiful core memories.”

From the beginning, Christina and her team envisioned a school that would radically reimagine what was possible for girls, one that would challenge conventions by putting their needs and strengths at the center."

"Washington Heights and Inwood (WHIN) Music Community Charter School is the first school in New York City to be developed out of El Sistema, a model for social action through music founded in Venezuela.

At the heart of its pedagogy is the musical ensemble as a teaching tool for academic, character and leadership development. The theater—the school’s core and unique program—is central to the design, physically and symbolically. The 400-seat world-class concert hall is visible from both the lobby and the street."

"The wealthiest city in the world should not have segregated schools, or 1 in 4 children growing up in poverty. But I won’t wait or just reimagine the system when I can actively work to build something better for the younger me, for parents like my mom, for the next Hannah-Jones family, and for Nayja and the kids to come."

- Leslie-Bernard Joseph, Chief Executive Officer of KIPP NYC

Block by block, some schools are diverse-by-design, and others are intentionally investing in the underserved. We don’t have to make tradeoffs between racial justice values and academic results anymore.

"Working within that system that I knew was not working, while trying to recreate and reimagine a new system, led me to public charter schools.

Charter schools are public schools. They are free, publicly funded, and held highly accountable – sometimes by multiple state agencies. They hold open board meetings, and community leaders and parents sit on these boards. Most importantly, our schools serve kids in the very districts and neighborhoods they call home."
