With heavy hearts we regret to share that our Soror Christina "Janan" Lopez, the #3 from the Spring 2001 class at Mu Chapter, passed away in Brooklyn, New York yesterday, April 15, 2026 after a brave fight with colorectal cancer. Janan was lovingly known by her Sister Name meaning "Heart and Soul" and she lived up to that name in everything she did.

In her last days she wished for Sorors to remember the joyful moments they shared with her and to take with them her love for them. She was a mom, a fashion lover, a runner, a traveler, dog mom, and friend to many.

In an age when women were often forbidden to speak freely, flowers blossomed as a secret means of communication. The placement, posture, color, length, and even the hand in which bouquets were exchanged all carried their own symbolism, each gesture carefully seeded to convey hidden messages.

Sunflowers, for example, spoke of passionate devotion and adoration. Their golden petals, like the suns rays, conveyed a love that was bold, unwavering, and full of warmth. The sunflower’s vibrant hue spoke of deep affection, while its towering presence conveyed admiration and a love that radiates endlessly.

Celebrating 68 years of Freedom, Resilience, and Unity

On this day in 1957, Ghana became the first sub-Saharan African nation to gain independence from British colonial rule.

The inspiration and initiative to fight for independence came from Yaa Asantewaa, the Queen Mother of Ejisu in the Ashanti Empire. She mobilized her people to fight against British colonial rule in the War of the Golden Stool, when no male leaders stepped forward. Her actions remain an inspiration for contemporary movements advocating for the rights of women in Africa.

Later on, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah led a series of successful protests and elections inspired by Ghandi’s philosophy of non-violent resistance. He became Ghana’s first Prime Minister and later its first President in 1960. Ghanian women specifically, played a crucial role towards the nations independence through grassroots organizing, cultural nationalism, and civil rallies.
