The New York Community Trust

The New York Community Trust We are the community foundation for New York City, Westchester, and Long Island.

The New York Community Trust connects past, present, and future generous New Yorkers with vital nonprofits working to make a healthy, equitable, and thriving community for all. We are a public grantmaking foundation dedicated to improving the lives of residents of New York City and its suburbs. We bring together individuals, families, foundations, and businesses to build a more equitable community

and support the effective nonprofits that make a difference. We apply knowledge, creativity, and resources to the most challenging issues in an effort to ensure meaningful opportunities and a better quality of life for all New Yorkers, today and tomorrow. Since 1924, the New York Community Trust has helped make our region a better place for all: Young and old, newcomers and natives. Our work is made possible through the enduring generosity of donors—from teachers and taxi drivers to Rockefellers. Nearly a century after we were founded, The Trust continues to produce a signature brand of philanthropy that is patient, strategic, and effective.

In a recent News 12 story, Long Island Program Director Melissa Greenberger highlights The Trust’s role in advancing water quality protections across Long Island.

Through strategic grantmaking, we support water-quality monitoring, pollution reduction, and hands-on cleanup efforts led by Save The Great South Bay, Friends of the Bay, and Peconic Baykeeper | Protecting Long Island's Waters.

See the full story from Logan Crawford here:

To naturally improve water quality, Friends of the Bay plans to introduce clams and oysters into the bay, which help filter pollutants from the water.

After adeptly leading The Trust through four years of major milestones, Amy Freitag has decided to step down as our president. We are thankful that she will continue with The Trust as our strategic advisor through June.

Amy strengthened The Trust from the inside out: building an exceptional team, leading us through our first-ever strategic plan, and deepening our engagement with donors, nonprofits, professional advisors, other foundations, and government. She leaves The Trust well-positioned to continue our commitment to serving our region.

Carrie Trowbridge, Trust general counsel, is serving as interim president during this transition. Carrie has been a steady and key leader at The Trust through previous transitions and is widely respected within the community foundation sector. With her guidance, and that of The Trust’s leadership team, we are energized for what’s ahead.
