Elephants are international symbols, loveable characters, and undoubtedly one of the most popular members of the animal kingdom. However, only about 35,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild, officially making them "endangered." As human populations expand rapidly in Southeast Asia, humans come increasingly into often harmful contact with wild elephants. Many groups are already working to alleviat

e the immediate threats to elephants by engaging in land preservation and restoration. However, as wild populations continue to decrease, it is clear there is more to be done. To complement existing conservation efforts, Think Elephants is creating long term solutions by educating students in areas of high human-elephant conflict. At Think Elephants, we use Asian elephants as a natural ambassador to bring conservation studies and critical thinking into the classroom. Our instructors teach students about ecosystems and wildlife, as well as the techniques of research design. We hope to provide our students with the scientific tools and resources they need to create change in their own world.

Visual attention has mostly been studied in primarily visual species, such as nonhuman primates. Although elephants rely more on acoustic and olfactory cues, they also use visual displays and gestures to communicate. Smet and Byrne (2014) showed that African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana) re...
