Four years ago today, our founder, Farahnaz Karim, wrote an article for , titled ‘The Inevitable Rise of Catalytic Capital’. The piece explored the power and potential of catalytic capital.

It’s encouraging to see that, years on, this conversation is gaining real momentum. We recently came across an article by calling for a shift toward “impact-first” investing, a theme that strongly echoes Farahnaz’s earlier insights.

Both pieces highlight a shared reality: traditional investment models are not sufficient to address systemic challenges. To drive meaningful change, capital must be deployed intentionally, with impact at the forefront.

We’re excited to see conversations on catalytic capital continue to grow and to be part of shaping what comes next.

📚Today is !
This year’s theme is all about the power of youth in co-creating education.

To mark the day, we’re spotlighting the 2025 research by , on catalytic capital’s role in strengthening the education-to-workforce pipeline.

The report found that:
“Traditional capital ignores high-impact opportunities that lack immediate financial returns, while philanthropy alone is insufficient.” It also argued “That by embracing a more holistic capital strategy, investors can scale what works and close opportunity gaps across the education-to-workforce landscape.”

🤝At Insaan, we could not agree more.

We are proud to say that our investee,
is a powerful example of catalytic capital in action.

Over the past 20 years, the Gyan Shala education model has undergone numerous independent evaluations, consistently demonstrating positive impacts on learning outcomes in government schools in India, ultimately expanding children’s future job opportunities.

Gyan Shala adopts a child-centred approach and curriculum, that puts focus more on children’s capability to learn than only on teacher’s capability to teach. Proving that when education systems are designed with learners and with a catalytic lens, lasting impact follows.

This blog appeared as a contribution in the 2025 Ibrahim Forum Report-Financing The Africa We Want: Read the report here: https://lnkd.in/d-uwujGQ

In his piece, Tarek highlights a critical issue: the urgent need to expand venture capital investment across Africa. He highlights the striking disparity that “Africa accounts for 18% of the global population and 5% of GDP, yet attracted just 0.6% of global venture capital in 2024.”

His blog is a powerful call to action for venture capitalists, policymakers, and ecosystem builders alike.
