We’re proud to honor Dr. Angel V. Mendoza, Jr. with the Nicholas Scoppetta Award for Child Well-Being at New Yorkers For Children’s 30th Anniversary Gala on November 9.

Dr. Mendoza has been an unrelenting champion for children, youth, and families, working across healthcare, public service, and child welfare to strengthen the systems they rely on. As Chief Medical Officer at ACS, he has led critical health and clinical programs serving young people in foster care and juvenile detention, as well as children who have experienced abuse and neglect.

His dedication to improving outcomes for vulnerable young people continues even further through Child and Adolescent Psychiatry for the Underserved (CAP4Us), an initiative he co-founded in 2023 to help expand access to psychiatric care for children and youth involved in the child welfare system.

Applications for NYFC's 2026 Spirit Award are now open!

The Spirit Award provides scholarships of up to $10,000 to young people with experience in NYC foster care who are working toward their bachelor's degree.

We're looking for current college juniors and seniors who have demonstrated academic success, resilience, and a commitment to supporting others.

What happens when two young people tie in a competition to rename a program?

They create something better together.

Earlier this year, we invited alumni to help rename Cohort Connection, NYFC's college persistence program. After a youth vote, ideas from Chantel and Kiahra tied for first place.

So they got together. They compared their ideas, tried combining them, scrapped versions that didn't work, and kept coming back to two words:

Bridge. Horizons.

The result is Bridge to New Horizons.

For Chantel and Kiahra, Bridge represents the connections, resources and community that help young people move forward. New Horizons reflects the many different paths their lives can take.

As Chantel told us: "There is no cap, there is no limit just because you've experienced the system. There are so many paths and ways that your life could be lived."

And Kiahra hopes the program will help other young people "feel seen, feel heard, feel supported throughout their journey and whatever they decide to do moving forward."

Thank you, Chantel and Kiahra, for helping give the program its next chapter. 💙
