Right to Counsel NYC Coalition

Right to Counsel NYC Coalition The Right to Counsel NYC coalition led the fight to make it a right to have a lawyer if you face an eviction in NYC. This is a victory for all of New York.

NYC is the first city in the country to make eviction defense a right! On August 11, 2017, the RTCNYC Coalition won a huge victory after a 3 year campaign, when Right to Counsel was signed into law, mandating legal representation for low-income tenants. This means that tenants no longer have to fear unjust evictions. This means that tenants no longer have to fear eviction as retaliation for organ

izing in their buildings or holding their landlords accountable. This means that we have more tools to fight gentrification. This landmark agreement sends a strong message to NYC tenants that their lives, homes and communities matter, that the City won’t stand by as they are forced to navigate the courts without representation and that they will be protected. This is a huge step forward towards creating a more equitable and just city. It is also a testament to the power, strength and beauty of organizing. ¡Si se puede, si se pudo y si se podrá! Thank you to everyone who is a part of and who has supported the Coalition! Right to Counsel will be implemented over the course of 5 years, by zip codes. By 2022, coverage will be universal. You can’t fight inflation while letting landlords evict working-class families without lawyers. Protect people, not profits.

Last night, we showed up to Queens Housing Court to demand Statewide Right To Counsel and Clean Hands 🏠✊🏿

To , Assemblymember Cook, , and every NY legislator who hasn’t signed on to our bills:

Stand with tenants. Support working-class New Yorkers. Pass Right to Counsel (A4669/S6772) and Clean Hands (A1621/S4098) NOW.

Statewide Right to Counsel means:
⚖️ Free legal support for tenants facing eviction
🏘️ More people staying in their homes and communities
💸 Support for working-class New Yorkers as we face a cost-of-living crisis

Clean Hands means:
🚫 No evictions from landlords with code violations
🔧 Real accountability
❤️ Safer, healthier homes for all

You say you stand with tenants? PROVE IT.

You say you fight for working-class New Yorkers? THEN DO IT.

You say you’re against Trump, Musk, & their attacks on the working class? THEN PASS OUR BILLS.
