Today is World IBD Day—what better moment to introduce two of our Hike Machu Picchu Honored Heroes, Liz and Rocio!
Liz was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis at 21 and has since faced a total colectomy, j-pouch surgery, a Crohn’s diagnosis, 16 surgeries, and multiple hospitalizations. Even after a recent severe blockage and more time in the hospital, she continues to move forward with determination, turning a long, complicated medical journey into a powerful source of strength.
Rocio has lived with Crohn’s for more than 20 years and began 2026 recovering from COVID and influenza, followed by a complex gallbladder surgery with serious complications. Born in Peru and no longer able to run after cervical spine surgery, she saw Hike Machu Picchu as a sign—a chance to return to her roots and prove to herself, and to others living with IBD, that they can still reach new summits.
Together, Liz and Rocio embody what it means to be Honored Heroes: showing the IBD community that hope, courage, and big goals are still possible, even in the face of ongoing disease.
