We work to transform knowledge from diverse sources and perspectives into conservation action. The CBC also proudly organizes the annual Student Conference on Conservation Science-New York (SCCS-NY) at the American Museum of Natural History. SCCS-NY gives graduate students & early-career professionals the chance to present their work to leaders in conservation science, policy, and management.

Exciting updates from the CBC! Our team has been busy, here’s a snapshot of our recent achievements:

🗣️ We have published new research strategies to mitigate noise and sound pollution.

🎣 We have launched new local research initiatives, including a collaboration with local partners to understand small-scale fishing in NYC and how to make it safer and more accessible.

🌏 The CBC’s inaugural Eleanor J. Sterling Conservation Fellow, Dr. Ann Marie Gawel co-led the 7th Mariana Islands Conservation Conference in Guam, welcoming over 300 participants to discuss traditional ecological knowledge, research, and community-driven conservation.

📑 We’re also delighted to announce that the CBC just published Volume 14 of Lessons in Conservation, featuring hands-on teaching materials from nature journaling and coding in R to developing genetic research questions using museum specimens (i.e., museomics).

Earlier this month, we were delighted to hold a fascinating discussion with Dr. Vera Solovyeva and Maidi Eira Andersson on Indigenous perspectives of human–nature relationships in the Arctic. How can the “right to roam freely in nature” and renewable energy development in countries like Sweden, Norway, and Finland be reconciled with Indigenous rights, values, and livelihoods?

Moderated by CBC associate director Mary Blair, speakers Vera Solovyeva and Maidi Eira Andersson will share insights on Indigenous relationships with nature, grounded in the traditions of the Arctic. The panel is ahead of a screening of Folktales, a film set in a Norwegian folk high school above the Arctic Circle, which will be included in your ticket.

Conservation efforts are more ethical and effective when local communities have a central role in shaping them. But how can practitioners and organizations support participatory monitoring and evaluation (PME) in ways that are practical and meaningful?

In a new paper, CBC scientist Amanda Sigouin and colleagues explore three key themes for effective PME: navigating collaborations, working within diverse cultural contexts, and co-managing PME resources.
