A Fair Shake for Youth, Inc. Through their work young people learn about verbal and non-verbal communication and build relationships based on trust, respect and positive reinforcement.

A Fair Shake for Youth offers disadvantaged and vulnerable youth programming that combines hands-on work with therapy dogs and a dog-related curriculum to helps build greater empathy and self-esteem. In weekly programming over the course of 10-12 weeks young people work with three to four therapy dog teams learning basic dog handling skills, teaching tricks and playing cognition games. A curriculu

m of dog-related topics including shelters, rescue, and breed discrimination is taught using videos, guests and field trips. Topics often resonate with the young people's own life experiences. A Fair Shake offers youth the opportunity to experience unconditional love, to nurture and be nurtured, and to feel good about themselves. In the process, they develop empathy, trust, a sense of responsibility and self-esteem. Through the program young people see an expanded view of their world and possibilities; for the most vulnerable the program offers a possibility of breaking the cradle to prison pipeline.

It is with great sadness, that I share that we have lost Jack. Cancer in people and dogs is devastating. Jack went from healthy to sick in such a short time. What a sweet, strong, intuitive boy. Jack started with A Fair Shake during the pandemic reading with students on Zoom. Each week he would be sure to coordinate his bandana color with the tee-shirt color his student picked the week before. Jack and his guardian, Carol, also volunteered every Sunday at Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital. Carol and Jack’s bond was as strong as I have ever seen. My heart goes out to Carol. Dogs do not live long enough. I hope there are lots of fences to jump and raccoons to tree over the rainbow bridge.
