Health and safety tips for cats on Halloween
Every October, mutations of black cat syndrome appear, leading to centuries of superstition and ignorance surfacing. Black Cat Syndrome is not a horrible bout of Halloween but it is a very real prejudice. Yes, the horror of the bad things that happen to black cats is a fact - that's why many shelters won't allow black cats to be adopted near Halloween.
Years ago, a friend of mine accidentally let her two cats on Halloween. She returned one, but her black cat did not. Still chasing her. There is no end date for guilt or cruelty. Ironically, in a 2012 study, Human Perceptions of Coat Color as an Indicator of the Local Cat's Character, the researchers demonstrated that cat lovers judge chains through their colors rather than their own. These provisions can be fatal. Dark-colored cats in shelters are often eliminated from light colors.
"Adopting a cat should include an assessment of the creature's personality, not his coat," says Michael Delgado, the lead author and doctoral student of psychology at the University of California, Berkeley. Black cats have proven to be less friendly than any other cat. In other words, don't judge a cat in color. To become a popular culture with science, it is easier to be safe than regret.
