Turns out wild cats are natural photographers. They just prefer to be in front of the lens.

Our remote cameras give us an unfiltered look at wild cat behavior and population health across millions of acres of habitat worldwide. This latest batch of photos is proof the work — and the cats — never disappoint.

Lions are resilient. But they need our help.

Stéphanie Périquet-Pearce, Ph.D., has spent her career studying and protecting these wild cats across Africa. Every photo in this carousel was taken by Stéphanie in the field — from the Kalahari to Hwange to Kruger.

"We go in for lions, but we stay for the ecosystem. By protecting wild cats, we're protecting prey, smaller carnivores, birds, insects, invertebrates and plant biodiversity."

Wild cats never stop surprising us. 🐾

Camera traps in Spain recently captured something scientists had never seen before in any carnivore: Iberian lynxes dunking their prey in water. Our own Dr. Wai-Ming Wong, Small Cats Program Director at Panthera, weighed in for Smithsonian Magazine: "What makes this especially interesting is that it points to problem-solving behavior; the lynx is not just reacting but potentially experimenting with a new way of handling food."

It's a reminder of just how much we still have to learn about wild cats — and why protecting and studying them matters so much.

Did you know that protecting tigers means protecting entire ecosystems?

This graphic shows just some of the prey species that depend on healthy tiger populations — and that's only part of the story. From the scavengers that feed at their kill sites to the forests that store more carbon because of their presence, tigers shape entire ecosystems in ways that might surprise you.

This International Day for Biological Diversity, discover why tiger conservation is biodiversity conservation.

On Santa Catarina Island in Brazil, ancient Indigenous shell mounds held an unexpected discovery: bone fragments suggesting that small wild cats once shared this landscape. Remote camera surveys indicate it's extremely unlikely any remain there today.

Recent analysis of those fragments has identified the missing species: the Atlantic Forest tiger cat. Panthera and Instituto Fauna Brasil are now laying the scientific and community groundwork for what could one day become a reintroduction.

In Rio de Janeiro, Panthera is also building on previous collaborations with Refauna to develop key translocation steps that could serve as a model for small cat reintroductions worldwide.

The Arabian leopard has not been seen in the mountains of Saudi Arabia for over a decade. Today, the Royal Commission for AlUla, Panthera and partners are laying the groundwork to bring it back.

With fewer than 200 individuals remaining in the wild, the Arabian leopard is one of the rarest wild cats on Earth — and one of the most culturally significant. Ancient petroglyphs across the region depict the leopard alongside people. The bravest young Bedouin men are still called Nimr and the clever and courageous women are called Nimrah, the local word for leopard. This reintroduction isn't just an ecological mission.

Since 2020, Panthera has conducted surveys covering more than 6,000 square kilometers, collected over one million wildlife images, and identified two potential release sites. In parallel, the team has built 39 predator-proof livestock enclosures and trained local Community Liaison Officers. Because bringing a large carnivore back only works if the people sharing that landscape are part of the plan.
