Campos Community Garden (Campos) is a sunny 5,000-square-foot community garden on East 12th Street between Avenues B and C in Manhattan. Its mission is: To maintain an open green space that provides resources for:
1) Urban Agriculture
2) Cultural & Environmental Events
3) Nutritional & Horticultural Education
All with the goal of creating a more peaceful and green neighborhood, city, country & pl
anet. The Children’s Garden was created in 2013 in the wake of Hurricane Sandy’s destruction after Children’s Workshop School generously took it upon themselves to seek and won a grant to help repair the garden. In gratitude, the garden decided to use the funds to pilot a gardening experience in a space opened up after a tree was knocked down during the Hurricane. We set out to design as unique, functional, and diverse—and fun--a children’s garden for the students to learn about gardening, food, history, science, art, and the environment. Contact information:

Campos members agree to abide by the following:
Membership dues. Members must pay nonrefundable memberships dues each year to use the garden. The membership dues per household are $10. Monthly meetings. Campos will meet monthly, and unless date changed with notice, on the last Wednesday of the month starting at 6pm, April through October in 2017. Members are required to attend at least 4 meetings during this time period. Member chores. Each member household is obligated to maintain open hours for 10 hours per season, in any combination of full open day times they wish. We will have a sign up calendar in the shed so that everyone can sign up for the days they wish to keep these open hours. When fulfilling open hour requirements, members should perform the following chores as needed during that time:
· Fill water barrels
· Pick up trash in tree pits and on sidewalk outside garden, and windblown trash throughout the garden
· Sweep or hose wash sidewalk
· W**d brick path
· Maintain compost pile
· Straighten up shed
· While the gate is open, greet visitors and be aware of their presence and behavior
Other duties. In good faith, garden members agree to help with community work in the garden every year. This work can include building and repair, general cleaning and maintenance or helping with social gatherings and other cultural events. All members who use water are expected to help refill the water barrels. Member Plots and Garden Usage
Individual member plots are assigned as they become available. Currently, all plots are taken by current members and a new member waiting list exists for plots as they become available (see below). Member plots. Only one plot for planting will be assigned per household. All gardeners agree to keep their plants in the area assigned to them. Effective immediately, plot holders should have their plots planted by June 1st of each season. Members who do not plant by June 1stor who fail to maintain their plots during the current season, forfeit their plots. Plots given up permanently by a member revert to the garden. Special consideration will be made for personal/family hardships. Because so much effort has been spent on recreating the raised beds after Hurricane Sandy, Campos Garden members are encouraged to use their raised bed’s primarily for fruits and vegetables and other edible/companion plants. Members agree to keep their plots maintained throughout the season. Gardeners must maintain the walkways around their area of planting, keeping them free of w**ds & trash. Personal belongings must not be stored in the garden during any season. Gardening courtesy to other members.Plants must not shade another gardener’s area. Garden members must not w**d, pick or harvest in anyone else’s plot without permission by the garden member assigned by that plot. Garden common beds.Oversight of maintenance and upkeep for the communal trees, flower beds and the Children’s Garden are the responsibility of specific assigned garden members and project leaders. If you would like to assist in any of these areas, first speak with the person assigned to that communal area. Perennial Beds: Chris Batenhurst

Environmental practices. All garden members are highly encouraged to practice environmentally sensitive and earth friendly gardening techniques, and discouraged from using artificial and chemical fertilizers and pesticides. Recycling. Please recycle your bottles, cans, plastic bags and other recyclable items by putting them in the blue garbage bin. Composting. Campos encourages and has several types of composting on site. GreenThumbNYC requires us to compost our plant materials in order to receive our annual delivery of top soil and compost. Only compostable items may be put in the compost pile (no trash, plastic bags, diapers, tampons or pads, meat, or dairy). Large sticks and branches should be cut down to 6 inch pieces or smaller. Only those who have previously attended a Bokashi workshop should use the Bokashi composting bins. Security and keys. Members are responsible for ensuring garden safety and must lock up the garden when they leave. Residents will get one key to the garden and any lost keys may be subject to a replacement fee. Residents must not duplicate or give their key to any other person outside of their household without permission of other members and doing may result lost key privileges. Prohibited behavior. Smoking, drinking alcohol, using or selling drugs, fi****ms, or fireworks, or starting fires outside of the barbecue and disrespectful behavior are prohibited. When in the Garden (or communicating over email), all garden members and visitors must behave in a manner that is respectful toward adults and children. Disrespectful behavior that will not be tolerated includes spitting, yelling, pushing and hitting people, throwing things, or any behavior that reasonably constitutes verbal or physical abuse, (including written insults). Should someone in the garden (or over email) be engaged in disrespectful behavior as defined here, they will be asked to leave the Garden (and stop communicating with members over email). A garden member accused of disrespectful or violent behavior is subject to termination of membership. Member guests. Members are responsible for the behavior of their guests and must ensure that guests abide by garden rules and do not create excessive noise or disturb neighbors of the garden. When in the garden, visitors must behave in a manner that is respectful to all adults, children, animals and the environment. Children under 18 must be accompanied at all times by a supervising adult or responsible garden member. Dogs must be on a leash and attended by their owner at all times. Member events. If a member wants to have a party or meeting in excess of 8 guests in the garden, they must sign up in the calendar hanging in the garden shed and notify the rest of the members by through the email listserv or with a sign on the shed, detailing the date, time and estimated number of guests. Parties and meetings must not restrict uninvited members’ use of the garden. All trash after the gathering should be removed from the garden. Music and sound level should be kept to a minimum and amplification is prohibited unless the host first obtains a permit from NYPD’s Ninth precinct. Party size should not exceed 25 guests, without the approval of the garden membership. New Garden Membership
Campos continues to accept new members. New members who would like an individual plot may be put on the plot waiting list until one becomes available. New members must comply with all other membership requirements, including assisting in the the upkeep and other duties for members of the common areas and meeting the 10-hour open hour per season minimum. Interested new members must initially come to one of the garden’s monthly meetings in order to introduce themselves and meet the other garden members. Acceptance of prospective new members is in the discretion of the general membership. Campos is committed to diversity in race, class, age, gender, sexual orientation, ethnicity and physical capacity in its general garden membership. Campos will not condone any act of discrimination by or of any member or prospective member based on these criteria. Warning and Termination
If any Garden member charges a fellow garden member with violating any part of these guidelines, this member would be given a warning. If the member violates the rule again, they will have to make the case before the general Garden membership at the next regular monthly Garden meeting, and the general Garden membership would then be allowed to ask questions. The person charged with the violation will be given time to respond. Members who abandon their plots, commit egregious violations, including violent or harassing behavior, criminal activity or commit multiple repeated violations without remedy, are subject to expulsion, by 2/3 vote of the garden members. A vote for expulsion would take place at the next regularly scheduled monthly Garden meeting, or at a specially scheduled meeting, if necessary.
