AGEN and AGEN-USA Inc.

AGEN and AGEN-USA Inc. AGEN and AGEN-USA Inc. Our history is an interesting one: we started in Sub-Saharah Africa as AGEN and then we developed to become AGEN-USA Inc. in America.

We are a product of innovation in that Affirmative action on Gender Equality Network (AGEN), initially known as Africa Grassroots Gender Empowerment Network (AGGEN) was established de facto in 2008 when its initial founders, Tanzania's Fulbrighters, were brought together by Ms. Diana A. Carvalho. This lady was the Coordinator at the Dar es Salaam U.S Embassy overseeing U.S. Department of State Ful

bright and Humphrey Alumni programs in Tanzania. While Ms. Carvalho brought together the Fulbright alumni as part of her job description, she always went an extra mile, by creating and strengthening relationship, firstly between her and the alumni and secondly, among alumni themselves. Through that relationship the idea of establishing AGEN and AGEN-USA Inc. emerged. The initial driving force for AGEN establishment was to foster cooperation among U.S Department of State Alumni in Tanzania and beyond and make change to the society. During the course of implementation we grew to cover the whole of Sub-Saharan Africa and New York in the United States of America. Specifically, AGEN and AGEN-USA Inc. founders made use of a call by the United States of America Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) of the US Department of State to come up with innovative ideas.

AGEN MOURNS THE PASSING OF DR. JAMES JESSE
10/18/2020

The Late Dr. James Jesse
It is with such extreme shock and sadness that we at AGEN have learned of the passing away of Dr. James Jesse. AGEN mourns the passing of Dr. James Jesse. According to family sources, Dr. Jesse suddenly passed away yesterday on 17th October, 2020. AGEN shares deepest sympathies to his family and loved ones.

The Late Dr. James Jesse played an instrumental role in the establishment of AGEN. AGEN is the product of the first Alumni Engagement Innovation Fund (AEIF) project in Tanzania. Dr. Jesse and the rest of the team made use of the first call by the government of the United States of America that sought innovative ideas from the alumni of the US-sponsored programs. The fund was launched on February 16, 2011. On May 23, the Tanzanian project was announced as one of the 38 winners of the AEIF and received an award of $25,000; this award was used to raise more than $300,000 grassroots resources and impacted the lives of 400 rural entrepreneurs and over 120 scholars and activists from across the globe. He is the one who proposed Affirmative action on the Gender Equality Network (AGEN) to be the name of the NGO to sustain the project. The founders unanimously accepted the name because of their dedication towards addressing existing gender inequalities. Further, the efforts of the late Dr. James Jesse resulted in the registration of AGEN. Dr. Jesse was a renowned Tanzanian lawyer with expertise in International and Human Rights Law.

The contribution of Dr. James Jesse to grassroots efforts is internationally recognized. He was one of the 2012 awardees of the internationally recognized TIAW World of Difference 100 Award as the Champions of Women’s Economic Empowerment Category. TIAW recognizes extraordinary women and men from around the world each year whose efforts have advanced the economic empowerment of women locally, regionally or worldwide. Dr. James was awarded the prize because of his efforts through his participation in AGEN. AGEN will surely miss Dr. James Jesse.
