Friends of Irving Square Park

A volunteer group dedicated to maintaining and beautifying Irving Square Park in Bushwick.

This Bushwick park occupies a full city block, bounded by Knickerbocker and Wilson Avenues and Halsey and Weirfield Streets. It has not been confirmed how Irving Square Park got its name; however, the name of one of the bordering streets may offer a clue. Beloved American writer Washington Irving (1783-1859) penned A History of New York (1809) under the pseudonym Diedrich Knickerbocker. The word k

nickerbocker has come to mean a descendant of the Dutch settlers of New York, but it also refers to full breeches gathered and banded just below the knee, or long bloomers worn as underwear (also knickers). A more recent use of the word is the New York Knickerbockers basketball team.

Our monthly cleanup returns next Sunday! We’ll be planting more natives (thanks to an Earth Day donation from our friends !), pulling weeds, watering, and cleaning. It’s on Mother’s Day so come out and work and then call her telling her you did some volunteering to make her proud!!

Exciting news for parents, kids, and nature lovers of all ages! We’re partnering with NYC’s Urban Park Rangers for a series of FREE nature adventures in Irving Square. Every Monday afternoon for the next 2 months, they’ll be hanging out in the park, hosting events like wildlife viewing, nature sketching, and more. Let’s watch the park come to life this Spring!

CALLING ALL PARENTS (and kids!) Next Tuesday is an important step in the Irving Square Playground renovation process. At this virtual meeting with the Parks Department, you’ll be able to share your ideas and input on what the playground upgrades should look like! This is a critical step in the capital projects process and is our opportunity to provide direct feedback and ideas to Parks.
