Going to Congress this year? A little prep goes a long way!

Matt Bleakley, Division Vice President at The Whiting-Turner Contracting Company and 2026 Congress Co-Chair, shared three things that have helped him get the most out of the week (and he's been at this for 11 years, so he'd know):

1️⃣ Look at the schedule before you arrive. Select the sessions you don't want to miss and have a loose plan for your days.
2️⃣ Stay out of your inbox. Yes, the day job is still happening, but the people standing next to you in the coffee line won't be there next week!
3️⃣ Be a connector. Talk to people, ask questions, and offer help when you can. The people who get the most out of Congress are the ones who show up ready to engage.

How do you bring people from 20–30 different companies together to work as one team?

On the $2.3B Sutter Santa Clara Acute Hospital megaproject, the team quickly set up processes. But with 100 people in the Big Room every week and new faces joining constantly, they learned that building trust, aligning expectations and making reliable commitments needed just as much attention.

In our recent interview, four team members representing the project's owner, general contractor and architect got candid about what worked, what didn't and how they adjusted, with practical insight on:

✔️ Aligning large teams
✔️ Improving Last Planner System® practices in design
✔️ Onboarding new team members
✔️ Building behaviors that support high-performance collaboration in the Big Room

We tend to associate workplace organization with physical materials, but digital clutter can create just as much friction.

Drawings, specifications, meeting notes, budgets, models, and decisions all lose value when the people who need them cannot quickly determine what is current or where to find it.

🏆 Congratulations to the 2026 LCI Engineering Design Award winner!

LCI is proud to recognize Advocate Aurora Health and the project team behind the Chicago Webster Ambulatory Outpatient & Surgery Center for demonstrating what is possible when Lean thinking, collaboration, and problem-solving come together.

The team transformed an aging retail building, located above an active bank and below a movie theater, into 59,000 SF of outpatient and surgical care, delivered five months ahead of schedule.

Through Big Room planning, Target Value Delivery, A3 Thinking, PDCA, Value Stream Mapping, BIM, and 44 prefabricated PODs, the team turned complex constraints into opportunities to create greater value.

👏 Congratulations to Advocate Aurora Health, HDR, The Boldt Company, IMEG, Martin Peterson Company, Novak Construction, and Gensler on this outstanding achievement!

🏆 Congratulations to the 2026 LCI Lean in Design Award winner!

LCI is proud to recognize Canadian Canoe Museum, Unity Design Studio Inc., and the entire project team for demonstrating how Lean thinking can elevate both design and project outcomes.

Through Integrated Project Delivery, Big Room collaboration, Target Value Delivery, and a culture built on respect and shared input, the team brought together designers, builders, trades, and the museum to create a purpose-built home for the world’s largest collection of paddled watercraft.

The result is more than a museum. It is a place where preservation, learning, craft, and lived experience come together, while showcasing what is possible when teams work collaboratively from design through delivery.

👏 Congratulations to the entire team on this well-deserved recognition!
