Today at 11:40am in New York, we lost a man of great heart and destiny — Stephen Weingrad.
For decades, he stood as a pillar of New York’s cultural life, shaping the city across the second half of the 20th century and into the 21st.

For over ten years, Steven guided the work of the Shchukin Gallery, and in recent years served as President of the Shchukin Foundation. His legacy of integrity, vision, and devotion to art will remain with us.

🎨🔥 Happy Birthday, Tom Wesselmann! 🚀

First, Matisse. The color. The cut-outs. The rebellion in soft edges and electric reds. Then Shchukin. The collector. The madman who saw the future before the future even knew what it was. And then Wesselmann—Tom freaking Wesselmann—grabs the whole history of modern art, strips it down, cranks the saturation, and turns it into something too smooth, too sexy, too perfect to be real.

This isn’t just Pop Art. This is Matisse on steroids. Advertising as desire. Flesh as a commodity, beauty as a weapon. The great American hallucination. Big, bold, screaming with color and wanting you to look, wanting you to want.

And now? Paris. Short circuit. Louis Vuitton Foundation finally puts Wesselmann where he belongs—next to the icons, next to Matisse, next to Shchukin collection, next to the history he ripped apart and rewrote. The future he painted is the one we’re living in. The fantasy became reality.

Happy Birthday, Tom. You saw it all coming.

We are deeply saddened to share the news of the passing of Nikolay Shchukin (Galerie Shchukin) , a visionary who profoundly shaped the world of art. Born in Moscow in 1953 and leaving us in Tallinn in 2024, Nikolay was not just the founder of Gallery SHCHUKIN and the Shchukin Foundation but also a beacon of innovation and passion in the art community.

Driven by a deep understanding of the intricate dance between psychology and the visual arts, Nikolay, initially a psychotherapist, ventured into the art world. Alongside Marina Shchukin, he laid the foundation for Gallery SHCHUKIN in Moscow in 1987, illuminating the path for contemporary Russian artists to the global stage. His pioneering spirit was evident in his instrumental role in the inaugural Sotheby's auction in Moscow in 1988.

His curatorial mastery shone brightly in "Jewels in Mud," a landmark exhibition at the Tampere Art Museum in Finland, showcasing the zenith of Russian contemporary art. The series "The Russian Collection represents…" further highlighted his commitment to bridging cultures, featuring a diverse array of artists from Armenia, Ukraine, Georgia, and Russia.

Nikolay's relentless pursuit of excellence led him to oversee "Mystery of Steppe Pyramids," an exhibition that unveiled golden treasures dating back to the 4th century B.C., among other significant projects that spanned continents and decades. His collaborations with The State Tretyakov Gallery, the Museum of ICC NTT “Matrix XX century,” and the State Museum of East demonstrated his dedication to the preservation and celebration of art in all its forms.

The expansion of Gallery SHCHUKIN to Paris and New York cemented its status as a crucible for avant-garde, non-conformist, and emerging talents, showcasing works from the indigenous Buryat sculptor Dashi Namdakov to Russian Avant-Garde masterpieces by Goncharova, Rozanova and Popova.

Nikolay's legacy is indelibly etched in the realms of creativity, innovation, and the transformative power of art. As we mourn his loss, we also celebrate his monumental contributions that have left a lasting imprint on the world. Gallery SHCHUKIN and the broader art community will continue to honor his visionary spirit by championing the values he held dear.

Our hearts go out to Marina Shchukin, their family, and all whose lives were enriched by Nikolay's extraordinary existence. He is survived by his wife, Marina, and their four children, ensuring his remarkable path is remembered and continued. Details of the memorial services will be shared to honor his legacy. Let us come together to pay homage to a remarkable life dedicated to the beauty and understanding of art.

Happy birthday to Joan Mitchell, who was born on this day in 1925! 🎂

Mitchell honed her unique style of gestural abstraction over the course of her career, which spanned nearly five decades across two continents. Today, her poetic understanding of composition, keen sensitivity to color, and dynamic application of paint to canvas continue to inspire new generations of artists and art-viewers. Through the work of the Joan Mitchell Foundation, established in 1993 to “aid and assist” artists, Mitchell’s legacy has also provided direct financial support and opportunities to more than 1,300 artists to date.

This month, as we celebrate Mitchell’s birthday, we have Paris on our minds, with the opening of Grey Art Museum, NYU’s inaugural exhibition “Americans in Paris: Artists Working in Postwar France, 1946–1962” slated for March 2. This show will include two paintings by Mitchell, loaned from the Foundation’s collection, exhibited alongside work by Norman Bluhm, Ed Clark, Sam Francis, Shirley Jaffe, Kimber Smith, and many of Mitchell's other contemporaries who lived and worked in Paris during this period.

Stay tuned over the coming weeks, as we’ll be sharing photos, biographical details, and of course paintings from Mitchell’s time in Paris from 1948 to the early 1960s.
