Sakhi for South Asian Survivors

Sakhi for South Asian Survivors Sakhi for South Asian Survivors is a community-based organization in the New York metropolitan area committed to ending violence against women.

Founded in 1989 by a group of five South Asian women, Sakhi, meaning “woman friend,” was created to fill a critical need — in spite of an abundance of religious and cultural centers, professional associations, and ethnic-specific groups within New York’s large South Asian immigrant population, there was no place for women to address the silenced subject of domestic violence. Today, Sakhi serves So

uth Asian survivors of all genders through our Counseling, Economic Empowerment, Food Justice, Youth Empowerment, and Anti-Violence Programs. If you or a loved one is looking for support please call us at (212) 868-6741; text (305) 204-1809; or email [email protected]

HISTORIC MOMENT FOR SAKHI 🔔

Yesterday, Sakhi for South Asian Survivors rang the Nasdaq Closing Bell — bringing national visibility to our mission and the communities we serve.

Coming just days after International Women’s Day, the moment was especially powerful. For more than 37 years, Sakhi has worked to uplift survivors of gender-based violence in South Asian and Indo-Caribbean communities — and yesterday that work was recognized on one of the world’s most visible stages.

We were proud to share this moment with Sakhi Board Chair Beesham A. Seecharan, First Bank CFO Andrew Hibshman and First Bank Board Member and Sakhi Advisory Board Member Neha Shah, alongside the Sakhi community—founders, survivors, staff, volunteers, and board members—who have helped impact 18,000+ lives.

As our Executive Director, Kavita Mehra, shared during the ceremony: “This is a milestone not only for our community, but for our board, our team, and for every single survivor in this room. For anyone who has ever felt like their voice did not matter, like they have lived on the margins, or felt unseen—this moment is for you. This is our moment of joy, because without joy, we do not have healing.”

Today we honor the strength, resilience, and voices of women everywhere; especially the brave survivors who continue to rise, heal, and lead. 💜

At Sakhi, we believe every survivor deserves safety, dignity, and a community that stands beside them. Your courage inspires change, your stories matter, and your power cannot be silenced.

This International Women’s Day, we celebrate survivors, uplift each other, and recommit to a future free from violence.

“It feels like we matter.” – Sakhi Community Member

Last night, Sakhi welcomed Mayor Mamdani to our Community Iftar, gathering in the spirit of Ramadan and at the start of Women’s History Month. It was also a historic first: in our 37-year history, he is the first Mayor to visit Sakhi’s office.

In a community so often overlooked, his presence shone a light on the survivors, families, and advocates who power this movement every day.

In his remarks, the Mayor named what so many in the room have lived: That Sakhi’s work, often unseen, has met New Yorkers in moments of immense hardship and reminded them they are not alone. That the struggles survivors are forced to endure are not theirs alone to bear. That solidarity means being seen, supported, and standing together to chart a way forward.

In a room filled with community members, our Board, and our dedicated team who walk alongside survivors every day, we felt the weight of that recognition. What began as a grassroots vision has grown into a powerful force for safety, dignity, and collective strength across New York City.

When a survivor says, “It feels like we matter,” that is the work. And last night, that truth filled the room.

It is with a heavy heart that we share the devastating news that Shalini Somayaji, Sakhi’s fifth Executive Director, passed away on January 4, 2026, after a courageous and fearless battle with cancer. She spent her final days at home, surrounded by her family.

To all who had the privilege of knowing Shalini, she will be remembered for her gentle presence, deep warmth, and unwavering kindness. Her capacity for care—for leaders, colleagues, and community—was extraordinary. She brought thoughtfulness and intention to every relationship, leaving people feeling seen, grounded, and valued.

Shalini embodied the very essence of leadership. She gave generously of herself and led with quiet strength, resilience, and confidence. Many described her as Sakhi’s rock—a steady force during moments of uncertainty. Her commitment to justice, paired with her belief in self-care and leadership development, helped shape a culture at Sakhi that centers care for staff as essential to serving survivors with integrity and compassion. Her influence remains deeply woven into who we are as an organization.

Serving first as Deputy Director and later as Executive Director, Shalini guided Sakhi through a period of profound transition. Her steady leadership was instrumental in stabilizing and rebuilding the organization we know today. Without her vision and dedication, Sakhi would not be what it is now.

There is no making sense of this loss. Her passing feels immeasurable and deeply unfair, and we grieve the loss of someone so generous, so grounding, and taken far too soon.

Shalini’s legacy lives on at Sakhi each day—in our values, our culture, and our continued commitment to care and justice. We hold her family, friends, and the countless lives she touched in our thoughts and prayers. May her memory be a blessing, and may her soul rest in peace.

As we step into 2026, we do so with resolve.

Survivors are facing deepening inequities, hostile rhetoric, and barriers to safety and justice. These challenges are real, and they show up every day in the lives of the people we serve.

Sakhi will continue to stand firm: providing culturally specific, survivor-centered support while advocating for justice and dignity. We will not retreat. We will organize, build, and imagine forward.

This work is fueled by community. Your belief keeps this lifeline strong.

Together, let’s make 2026 a year of courage, connection, and collective power: where survivors don’t just survive, but lead, heal, and thrive.

This Giving Tuesday, The Power of One begins with you.

At Sakhi, we see every day how The Power of One can transform. One choice, one gift, one act of solidarity can ripple across generations. When one person believes in another, connection becomes strength. But we cannot do this without you.

This , we’re calling on our community to fuel this movement. In a time of deep polarization and rising threats to women, immigrant communities, and q***r and trans survivors, your belief in one person can be transformative. One gift can keep someone safe. One action can shift policy. One voice can spark collective courage.

Stand with survivors. Stand for gender justice. Be the power of one.

We are honored to share that Sakhi for South Asian Survivors is officially an awardee of the Action for Women’s Health Open Call, funded by Pivotal Ventures and managed by LeverforChange This recognition places Sakhi among just 80+ organizations worldwide chosen for their innovation, equity, and impact

Following our previous $2 million award from MacKenzie Scott’s Yield Giving Open Call, Sakhi is now part of a small and distinguished group of organizations globally honored by both of these prestigious, competitive initiatives.

We are at an inflection point: a rare moment of possibility where the local and national advocacy intersect, and where our collective action can shape the next generation’s understanding of justice, safety, healing and liberation.

As we enter this new chapter, we remain committed to our foundational values: centering survivor leadership and survivor power, and serving all survivors.

A gift of this magnitude is a reflection of Sakhi’s 36-year legacy of survivors, team members, community members, stakeholders, board members, and those who came before us who are with us today–all of whom have built, led, and sustained this movement for survivor justice. It honors the trust survivors place in Sakhi every day and strengthens our capacity to meet the growing needs of our community.

Together, we are shaping a future rooted in justice, healing, and hope.
