Shevchenko Scientific Society, USA

Shevchenko Scientific Society, USA The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US is a Ukrainian-American scholarly institution. The scope of the Society is international.

The Shevchenko Scientific Society is an organization of learned men and women dedicated to scholarship. It is the oldest Ukrainian academy of arts and sciences whose activities have been the mainstay of Ukrainian cultural life for over a century. Founded in 1873 in the city of Lviv, Ukraine, the Society was liquidated by the Soviet regime in 1939; however, it was reestablished in 1947 in Western E

urope and in the United States, and in 1989 in Ukraine. The headquarters of the Society in the US is located in New York City; besides offices and lecture halls, it contains a specialized library, a depository of archives pertaining to Ukraine and the Ukrainian diaspora, and an art collection. The Society has chapters in Washington, DC, Philadelphia, PA, Chicago, IL, Detroit, MI, and Cleveland, OH. National Shevchenko Scientific Societies exist also in Australia, Canada, Poland, Slovakia, and one headquartered in Sarcelles, France, for members in Western Europe. The work of all Shevchenko Scientific Societies is coordinated by a quadrennially elected World Council with offices in Lviv, New York, and Toronto. Its membership, past and present, includes many distinguished foreign scholars, among them the physicists Albert Einstein and Max Planck, and the French scholar André Mazon. Starting in 1892, the Society has published over 230 volumes of The Memoirs of the Shevchenko Scientific Society (each volume contains articles on a particular topic or discipline), a considerable number of scholarly works in various languages, e.g., three multi-volume encyclopedias of Ukraine, and is now publishing an Encyclopedia of Ukrainian Diaspora. The Society has also published over 120 scholarly volumes (some jointly with other scholarly presses), among them Ukraine and Ukrainians in the World (1994), Towards An Intellectual History of Ukraine: An Anthology of Ukrainian Thought from 1710 to 1995 (1995, in Ukrainian), and a 2-vol. Ukrainian-Czech Dictionary (1994-96 ). Members receive a 20% discount on books published by the Society. In the United States, the Society organizes and sponsors scholarly conferences, colloquia, symposia, and weekly public lectures. It is an affiliate member of the American Association for the Advancement of Slavic Studies (AAASS), the Association for the Study of Nationalities (ASN), and a consortium of the greater New York scholarly institutions involved with Ukrainian Studies. The Society participates in national and international scholarly conferences and congresses on Ukrainian and/or Slavic Studies. It also provides research grants for scholars and stipends for qualified students. While the main function of the Shevchenko Scientific Society in the United States lies in the areas of scholarship and education, at its headquarters in New York, it also provides for the general public: information for students on institutions of higher learning; facilities for neighborhood educational programs, and poetry readings. The Shevchenko Scientific Society, USA, is exempt from Federal Income Tax under the provision of section 501 (c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code. Receipts for tax purposes are provided for all donations to the Society.

Book Launch: BOTH SIDES FACE EAST/DURABLE WORDS

A multilingual anthology of various authors responding to the war in Ukraine in their respective languages, along with translations to Ukrainian and English. The book is a fruit of an international project under the auspices of Marci Shore, with the support of Fondation Jan Michalski and the International Renaissance Institute. A Ukrainian journalist ends each day “scorched by another person’s grief.” A schoolgirl in Croatia cherishes her Barbie and learns to dread air raid sirens more than her geometry homework. A poet imagines the spiritual life of a fish who escapes the hook. An exiled artist recreates her homeland in the shape of a bird. The writers assembled in this volume dream and document and remember, they translate one another’s work and meditate on fragility and resilience in the face of nihilism and obliteration. The collection gathers poems, essays, and stories written and translated in nine languages, reflecting an ongoing effort to communicate and understand across cultures. Both Sides Face East/Durable Words began as a response to the invasion of Ukraine, but stakes a wider claim on behalf of human value and integrity.

CHORNOBYL: A GATEWAY TO THE UNCANNY -
REPRESENTING THE DISASTER IN FIRST WORLD DOCUMENTARIES

This lecture examines how First World documentary films portray the Chornobyl disaster and its impact on Ukraine. It analyzes films such as Back to Chornobyl (1989), Chernobyl Heart (2003), White Horse (2008), The Babushkas of Chernobyl (2015), and The Russian Woodpecker (2015). The presentation highlights significant shifts in narrative following the Soviet Union's collapse, asserting that representations of Chornobyl evolved dramatically. Using the concept of epistemic injustice from Miranda Fricker and Vitaly Chernetsky, the lecture shows how these post-Soviet portrayals reflect Ukraine's diminished international status. Unexpectedly, this context provides insight into the skepticism toward Ukraine's subjectivity, especially regarding its capacity for self-defense in early 2022.

The Shevchenko Scientific Society in the US is honored to collaborate with the Young Performers Foundation in promoting Ukrainian classical music.

We believe that music creates a pathway to a deep understanding of a nation and its experiences. Built layer by layer over centuries of history, shaped by surrounding nature and forward-thinking leaders, it is one of the strongest ambassadors — one that never plays politics, but always speaks the truth.

This time, an extraordinary trio of musicians – Pavlo Gintov, Solomiya Ivakhiv, and Steven Back – will perform as Ukrainian music guides us in commemorating the victims and heroes of the largest ecological catastrophe: the Chornobyl disaster.

Join us on May 1st at Carnegie Hall. See the Young Performers Foundation page for full details and the list of other sponsors.
