Preserving, protecting & promoting African American music through tuition-free training, live performance & paid opportunities rooted in gospel, jazz, R&B & Harlem’s legacy. Housed in a renovated, attractive, spacious, five story brownstone on 126 Street across from the State Office Building, in Central Harlem, The Mama Foundation is in the heart of the community and in touch with the pulse of the people. Featuring Vy Higginsen's Gospel Choir of Harlem, Uptown Musical Theater Productions, and the award-winning arts education program Gospel for Teens.

Day in the life of a Mama Music Program student….. In 30 seconds.

Students in Mama Music Matters can expect to learn many foundational vocal skills, such as breathing, performance, pitch and harmony. Additionally, the summer boot camp offers lessons in other performing art forms, such as dance and acting! If you missed the opportunity to enroll in our Fall semester, we run the program in the Spring, as well as a bootcamp in the summer. Keep an eye on our socials for future enrollment dates!

Today, on the first day of fall, we’re celebrating a new season for the Mama Music Program.

In 2006, and set out to provide free music education to young people inspired by the legacy of . Gospel for Teens was born.

20 years later, that vision has grown into the , with an award-winning 60 Minutes feature, Broadway stars, performances on Saturday Night Live and the Grammys, and generations of young singers finding their voices.

Now, we’re welcoming a new class of young artists into that same brownstone to learn, grow, perform, and build on the legacy of Black music. Our final open house for the Fall 2026 Mama Music arts training programs will take place September 26.

Students from 7-19 years of age can apply for the tuition free training by audition. Learn more and apply using the link in the bio.
