Today marks Juneteenth, a holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth marks the day in 1865 in which federal troops ensured freedom to the enslaved people in Galveston, TX, abolishing slavery nearly two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation.

While June 19th, 1865 was a day of liberation and a symbol of progress in American history, today is also a reminder that we still have far to go on the path to racial equity.
