75 years ago, The Lookout announced a special opportunity to tour the brand-new American Export Lines superliner SS Constitution for a $1 admission benefiting SCI and other maritime charities, including The Mariner’s Family Asylum, Seamen’s House (YMCA), Society for Seamen’s Children, and The Service League of the United States Marine Hospitals of the Port of New York.

This photo of SS Constitution nearing launch day at the Quincy, Massachusetts, shipyard accompanied the announcement. Decades later, the famed liner sank off Hawaii while under tow to be scrapped in 1997.

Today, on the International Maritime Organization - IMO ’s Day of the Seafarer, we recognize the men and women who keep global trade moving—often under immense pressure and in increasingly dangerous conditions.

This year’s theme, “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks,” shines a light on the realities of life at sea, especially for those navigating high-risk and conflict-affected regions.

At SCI, we see firsthand the sacrifices seafarers make to keep our world connected. Through advocacy, chaplaincy, training, and support, we stand alongside seafarers and maritime workers every day.

Their work may be out of sight, but it should never be out of mind.

This Sunday, SCI Chaplain, the Rev. Geoff Davis, was commissioned as a Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG) Chaplain in the U.S. Navy Reserve. Before his commissioning, Davis served in the Navy Chaplain Candidate Program while completing the requirements to become a fully qualified chaplain.

As part of the commissioning process and oath of office, he signed a service agreement with the Navy and will soon be assigned to a unit where he will begin drilling and training in this new phase of military service.

Reflecting on the milestone, Davis said, “I am honored and excited to serve U.S. Navy Sailors and U.S. Marines in this role.”

The accompanying photo shows Geoff and his wife, Lisa Davis, at the commissioning ceremony held at their local church.

Please join us in congratulating Geoff on this wonderful achievement and exciting new chapter of service.
