What an incredible gift of kindness from Mary S. of Pennsylvania! ❤️

Mary created and donated **21 hats, 17 scarves, and a pair of socks** to bring warmth and comfort to seafarers & mariners this Christmas. 🎄⚓ Each handmade gift is a reminder that someone cares and is thinking of them during the holiday season.

Thank you, Mary. Your kindness will make a difference to those spending Christmas away from home. 🎁

A special day on the river! ⚓

Last Saturday, SCI Supervisory Chaplain the Rev. Grace Pardun and incoming SCI Chaplain the Rev. Charles Uhlik joined American River Transportation Company (ARTCo) for a vessel christening.

Moments like these are a meaningful opportunity to celebrate the people and vessels that keep our waterways moving—and to strengthen the relationships at the heart of SCI’s ministry to mariners.

Congratulations to the entire ARTCo team, and thank you for including SCI in the celebration!

Presence matters. Connection matters. ⚓

This week in Galveston, Texas, SCI Chaplains the Rev. Geoff Davis and the Rev. Nancy Simpson spent time with Jeff Voor at G&H Towing—one of the many visits that keep SCI connected to the mariners and maritime communities we serve.

Chaplaincy is rooted in showing up, listening, and building relationships. Whether aboard a vessel, at a terminal, or over a conversation ashore, these moments of connection help strengthen the bonds that sustain our maritime community.

We’re grateful for the opportunity to be present and for partners like G&H Towing who welcome SCI along the way.

On This Day in 1521, Cuauhtémoc, the last Aztec emperor, surrendered to Hernán Cortés after an 80-day siege, marking the fall of Tenochtitlan and the end of the Aztec Empire.

More than 500 years later, on May 17, 2025, the Mexican Navy training barque Cuauhtémoc, named in his honor, became at least the fifth vessel known to have struck the Brooklyn Bridge. The tragic collision claimed the lives of two crew members. In the days that followed, SCI provided pastoral care and coordinated a memorial service honoring the fallen mariners while supporting their surviving crewmates.

This historic image shows the Brooklyn Bridge in the upper right, with SCI's former headquarters at 25 South Street on the left and the newly opened FDR Drive between. Since its first cables were strung in 1877, the bridge has limited the height of vessels navigating the East River.

SCI staff member Janet Temchus has been celebrating the lives of seafarers, truckers, and port community members for decades as the ISC’s daytime front desk administrator. This week, that community and the staff of the ISC took care to celebrate Janet on her birthday. Happy Birthday, Janet! Your heart for those we serve is an inspiration to us all!

August is National Wellness Month—a reminder to make your well-being a priority, wherever you are. 💙

Finding healthy ways to manage stress, staying connected, and asking for support when you need it can make a difference. SCI’s chaplains are ready to listen and walk alongside mariners through life’s challenges.

You don’t have to face them alone.

We can't help but admire the beautiful colors in these four scarves and hat, made by Katy B. from Arkansas. 🧣 They are absolutely gorgeous, and we're certain they'll be treasured by the seafarers and mariners who receive them this Christmas. ⚓

A heartfelt thank-you Katy for sharing your time, talent, and generosity. ❤️ Your kindness will bring warmth, comfort, and a reminder that others are thinking of them during the holiday season. 🎁

What’s inside these boxes is so much more than yarn. 🧶

Lining our hallway are 2,941 hand-knit and crocheted gifts for 344 vessels headed to Paducah, Kentucky, for US river mariners.⚓️

🎅 The mini–Santa Sacks inside these boxes were packed by members of WISTA (Women in International Shipping & Trade Association) during our annual Christmas in July event. None of this would have been possible without the incredible generosity, time, talent, and heart of every fiber artist.

Every stitch and every act of kindness remind mariners that they are appreciated. We are grateful to you for making this mission possible. ❤️
