Community can look like many things. Sometimes, it looks like cafecito, paint-covered hands, laughter across the table, and a room full of people reconnecting through culture and creativity. ☕️🎨🇩🇴

This weekend, we gathered to paint Dominican grecas inspired by home, memory, and personal style—reminding us that art can be a bridge back to ourselves and to each other.

Thank you to and everyone who joined us for this beautiful afternoon of culture, connection, and community.

Stay tuned for our June event,

“We leave the last page reaching for a glass of water.”

That’s what it feels like to finish Peggy Robles-Alvarado’s Burn Me Back (Four Way Books)—a collection that blazes with memory, ancestry, and survival.

Rooted in the intersections of the Puerto Rican and Dominican diasporas, Peggy’s poems move through loss, family lore, and the kind of language that refuses to be contained. Her Spanglish carries the rhythm of working-class wisdom, resilience, and love where a fire escape becomes a terrace, and grief becomes an offering.

Whether you’re a poet or someone who simply values truth-telling and transformation, Burn Me Back reminds us why words still have the power to heal and ignite.

In collaboration with Word Up Bookshop join us to welcome poet and magic maker Peggy Robles-Alvarado for the celebration of her latest collection, Burn Me Back (Four Way Books). Joined by Dr. Melissa Castillo-Garsow, Caridad De La Luz (La Bruja), and Massiel Alfonso, this event explores Latina narrative, family lore, and the power of poetry to transform loss into rebirth.

In Burn Me Back, Robles-Alvarado writes at the crossroads of Puerto Rican and Dominican diasporas, blending Spanglish, memory, and ancestral storytelling. Her poems honor immigrant resilience, working-class wisdom, and the language of survival — where “a fire escape is also a terrace.” With fire and tenderness, she reimagines belonging, archives family histories, and redefines what it means to rise from ashes.

The Dominican Writers Retreat is a life-changing experience and applications are NOW OPEN for 2026!

Next year, we’re offering two powerful experiences to support and inspire our writers:

When Angy envisioned the Santo Domingo Retreat (July 6–13), she imagined giving our community the chance to walk the streets of the Zona Colonial, explore archives, and immerse themselves in Dominican history. It’s for educators, grad students, and writers ready to transform research and memory into story.

Mariela, who has lovingly guided writers in Cabarete for three unforgettable years, now enters her 4th year leading the Cabarete Retreat (July 13–20). This generative retreat by the beach has become a creative home for many — a place where the ocean inspires breakthroughs, lifelong friendships are born, and writers finally give themselves permission to create without interruption.

Both retreats were born from the desire to continue nurturing Dominican writers — creating spaces for growth, healing, and storytelling rooted in our culture. Past participants have left with manuscripts in progress, renewed confidence, and a deeper connection to themselves and to the island.

📅 Applications close November 30th.
