🔍 What can social sector leaders in the U.S. and Japan learn from each other when the challenges are shared across an ocean? That question drives the Japan-U.S. Social Innovation Network (JUSSIN), a bilateral initiative from USJF 2026Q1 grantee ETIC. (Entrepreneurial Training for Innovative Communities).

Through bilingual learning sessions, in-person convenings and thematic working groups, JUSSIN turns cross-border learning into concrete social action — building a durable platform where leaders co-design scalable solutions and strengthen the social innovation ecosystems in both countries.

なぜNPO支援者は増えないのか。米日財団2026年第2四半期助成先であるNPOサポートセンターがこの問いに向き合った調査から見えてきたのは、育成の前段階、つまり新人支援者が最初の案件と信頼を得るための「紹介」の仕組みそのものでした。詳しくは8月27日（木）13:00からのオンライン報告会で紹介されます。詳細はNPOサポートセンターの投稿をご覧ください。

NPO Support Center Japan, one of the USJF's 2026Q2 grantees, set out to answer that question and found the missing piece isn't training, but the informal referral networks new practitioners rely on to land their first work and build trust. 「NPO支援者はなぜ増えないのか。」

NPOの組織基盤強化や経営支援のニーズが高まる一方、「NPO支援者が足りない」という課題は長く指摘されています。

では、なぜ支援者は増えないのでしょうか。

NPOサポートセンターでは、NPO支援を仕事として実践する11名へのアンケート・インタビュー調査を実施しました。

当初は「NPO支援人材をどのように発掘・育成すればよいのか」という問いからスタートした今回の調査。

しかし、調査を通じて見えてきたのは、「育成」の前に、新人支援者が最初の案件を獲得し、信頼を築くための市場の仕組みが十分に存在していないということでした。

実際、今回お話を伺った支援者の多くは、

・NPO勤務時代の人脈
・中間支援組織とのつながり
・支援者同士の紹介
・以前のクライアントからの紹介

などを通じて仕事を獲得し、実践を重ねながら専門性を広げていました。

つまり、専門性を「身につければ」支援者になれるわけではなく、実践の機会、信頼、紹介ネットワークが循環することで、支援者としてのキャリアが形成されているのではないか。

今回の調査では、この構造を「紹介ネットワーク市場」として整理し、新人支援者が最初の案件を獲得するための「市場接続モデル」という仮説を提示しています。

「自分も最初の案件は紹介だった」
「確かに、実践しながら専門性が広がっていった」
「新人の頃は、そもそも誰からも紹介されなかった」

そんな経験をお持ちの方もいらっしゃるかもしれません。

📌 Applying for a USJF grant is about to look a little different. Starting with the 2026Q4 grant cycle starting on August 22, 12 AM EDT, the United States-Japan Foundation is moving its grant application process online — replacing the current email submission and cover sheet with a designated Letter of Inquiry (LOI) form on the USJF Grants page. Full details via the link in the comment below.

Please also note the recently revised submission deadlines: LOI submissions for Q3 are due Friday, August 21, 2026, at 11:59 PM EDT / Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 12:59 PM JST, and the Q4 deadline has moved to Friday, December 4, 2026, at 11:59 PM EST / Saturday, December 5, 2026, at 1:59 PM JST.

In just six days, a USJF fundraiser for Kumamoto earthquake relief exceeded its $25,000 goal. 🙏

The United States-Japan Foundation (USJF) and the United States-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP) will add another $25,000, with proceeds directed to Peace Winds America and its affiliate, Peace Winds Japan, which has led relief operations in the region since the magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck on July 28. Among those on the ground: a USJLP Fellow supporting survivors through Peace Winds Japan's medical response team. Read the full story via the link in the comments below.

📝 USJLP 2026 Conference: Day 7 | Bringing an incredible week to a close! Looking back at the final day of the 2026 USJLP Annual Conference and Fellows Weekend, filled with critical dialogue, alumni celebrations, and lasting memories.🇺🇸🇯🇵

The morning at the Stanford Faculty Club featured rapid-fire Lightning Talks and our capstone session on the future of the U.S.-Japan partnership. Following a lively lunch social, the afternoon concluded on a celebratory high note as we honored milestone reunion classes, celebrating 10, 15, 20, and 25 years of fellowship.

For our grand finale, the community headed to Long Branch Farms in the hills above Half Moon Bay for an American Old West experience! From line dancing and pit-fired BBQ to casual games and s’mores, the evening peaked with the graduation of our 2nd-Year Delegates and a moving closing ceremony.🎓

Thank you to all our Delegates, Fellows, and supporters who made this week in Silicon Valley truly unforgettable. Until next year!

📝 USJLP 2026年度会議 Day 7 | 素晴らしかった一週間を締めくくります！重要で深い対話、同窓生のお祝い、そして心に残る思い出に満ちた、2026年度USJLP年次会議および「フェローズ・ウィークエンド」最終日の様子を振り返ります。🇺🇸🇯🇵

スタンフォード・ファカルティ・クラブでの午前中は、スピーディーなライトニング・トークと、日米パートナーシップの未来に関するまとめのセッションが行われました。活気あふれるランチ交流に続き、午後はフェローになって10周年、15周年、20周年、25周年という節目の表彰を行い、最高のお祝いの雰囲気の中で締めくくられました。

グランドフィナーレとして、一同はアメリカの古き良き西部体験を味わうため、ハーフムーンベイの丘にある「Long Branch Saloon and Farms」へ。ラインダンスや直火でのBBQから、数々のゲームや焼きマシュマロのスモアまで楽しんだ夜は、2年目デリゲートの卒業式と感動的な閉会式で最高潮を迎えました。🎓

シリコンバレーでのこの一週間を本当に忘れられないものにしてくださったすべてのデリゲート、フェロー、そして支援者の皆さま、ありがとうございました。また来年！

📝 USJLP 2026 Conference: Day 6 | Looking back on an incredible start to Fellows Weekend! As the 2026 USJLP Annual Conference transitioned into its final chapter on the sixth day, we welcomed our alumni back into the fold to join our Delegates in Silicon Valley.

The weekend kicked off with rapid-fire intros and deeply personal table conversations sharing the "stories that shaped us." The afternoon brought engaging discussions on Silicon Valley’s global cultural impact, Delegate-hosted table talks, and an exclusive visit to Perplexity AI headquarters.

The highlight of the day was an unforgettable evening at the Computer History Museum in Mountain View. After exploring computing evolution, Delegates and Fellows gathered for a festive dinner reception that culminated in the "USJLP Takes the Stage" talent showcase, where we welcomed back San Jose Taiko founders PJ and Roy Hirabayashi, bringing the entire room together in an electric moment of unity!🎉

📝 USJLP 2026年度会議 Day 6 | 最高の熱気に包まれた「フェローズ・ウィークエンド」の幕開けを振り返ります！2026年度USJLP年次会議の6日目には、デリゲートのもとへ世界中からフェロー（卒業生）が駆けつけ、新たな交流が始まりました。

初日は「自分を形作った物語」をテーマにした深遠な対話からスタート。午後はシリコンバレーが世界に与える影響についての議論やデリゲート主導のテーブルトーク、さらにPerplexity AI本社への特別訪問も実施されました。

ハイライトは、マウンテンビューの「コンピュータ歴史博物館」で開催されたキックオフ・パーティー。展示を楽しんだ後は、賑やかなディナーレセプションと才能溢れる特設ステージ「USJLP Takes the Stage」へ。クライマックスにはサンノゼ太鼓創設者のPJ＆ロイ・ヒラバヤシ氏を再び迎え、会場全体がひとつとなる最高にエネルギッシュなモーメントとなりました！🎉
