What if the key to safer cities isn't more policing — but more shade?

A new USJF-supported study, featured in our last Grantee Profile of Columbia University, uses machine learning to analyze 15 years of New York City data. Co-authored by Mengling Qiao, Xuan Di, Adam Nayak, Upmanu Lall and USJLP Fellow Masahiko Haraguchi (2022, 2023), the research reveals that temperature fluctuations and public transit access are critical predictors of urban safety, alongside socioeconomic conditions.

The research team's recommendations offer vital blueprints for climate-resilient city planning: cool urban areas with green spaces, design transit networks with safety in mind, and tailor emergency solutions to specific neighborhood vulnerabilities rather than relying on static, one-size-fits-all models.

都市をより安全にする鍵が、警察を増やすことではなく日陰を増やすことだったら———

先日のコロンビア大学の助成先紹介で取り上げた米日財団支援の新たな研究では、機械学習を用いてニューヨーク市の15年間にわたるデータを分析しました。メンリン・チャオ氏、シュアン・ディ氏、アダム・ナヤック氏、ウプマヌ・ラール氏、そして日米リーダーシップ・プログラム（USJLP）フェローの原口正彦氏（2022, 2023）が共同執筆した本論文は、気温の変化や公共交通機関へのアクセスが、社会経済的要因と並んで都市の安全性を左右する極めて重要な予測因子であることを明らかにしています。

研究チームによる提言は、気候変動に強い都市計画のための重要な設計図となります。一律の固定的なモデルに頼るのではなく、緑地化によって都市を冷却し、安全性を考慮した交通ネットワークを設計し、地域の脆弱性に合わせたきめ細かな対策を講じることが求められています。

With Japan currently undergoing "truly fundamental social, political, and economic changes," next-generation social science research has never been more critical. この度、当財団の岡部晴人が、一般財団法人社会的インパクト・マネジメント・イニシアチブによる「Social Impact Day 2026」のセッション9「インパクトフィランソロピー：社会変革を生み出すために」に登壇する運びとなりましたのでお知らせいたします。

本セッションでは、Japan Impact Instituteの松島拓氏、公益財団法人社会変革推進財団（SIIF）の工藤七子氏と共に、複雑化する社会課題に対して、フィランソロピー資金がどのようにリスクを取り、長期的なエコシステム構築を支える「触媒」としての役割を果たせるかについて深く議論いたします。
