From governor’s races to state legislatures, six members of the United States-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP), the signature initiative of the United States-Japan Foundation (USJF), are on the ballot in the U.S. midterm elections this November 🗳️

Three are running for governor in Maryland, Nevada, and Maine. The others are seeking seats in the U.S. House, a statewide office in California, and the Indiana State Senate. Two of the candidates shared a campaign stop in Las Vegas this summer, and a seventh member has effectively secured a state senate seat ahead of Election Day. Feathered Diplomacy, supported by the U.S.-Japan Global Impact Grant from Sister Cities International and USJF, was featured on WIVB Channel 4's Wake Up!, a local morning news program in Buffalo. Representatives from Buffalo Audubon Society and the Japan Culture Center of Western New York appeared on the show to talk about the exchange between Buffalo and its sister city Kanazawa, which builds on the two cities' shared Important Bird & Biodiversity Area status. 🎯 Job opportunity at George Washington University's Elliott School of International Affairs

The Elliott School of International Affairs and the Department of Political Science are hiring a tenure-track Assistant Professor who will hold the Chair of Japan-US Relations. The position is open to scholars of comparative politics and international relations with a Ph.D. in political science or a related field and a primary focus on Japan. Japanese language skills and a record of research in Japan are highly appreciated. USJLP Fellow Kofi Bazzell-Smith (2025, 2026), the first professor of Japanese manga practice in the U.S. and recipient of USJF's social impact stipend for the Global Manga Academy, will speak at the Japan Information & Culture Center, Embassy of Japan in Washington, D.C., on October 14. He'll discuss his upcoming graphic novel Azuki, his work bridging U.S. and Japanese culture, and how manga education is taking shape stateside. Doors open at 6 PM, with the talk starting at 6:30 PM. After 13 years at the United States-Japan Foundation (USJF), Tomoyuki Watanabe is being recognized by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the Foreign Minister's Commendation, honoring his contributions to strengthening ties between Japan and the United States. 🎉 Watanabe helped shape the United States-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP), later leading USJF's grants program, from youth exchange initiatives like the Japan Bowl and America Bowl, to disaster-resilience cooperation following the Great East Japan Earthquake. Keio LEAP for Nonprofit, supported by USJF, is hosting the Open Seminar Series 2026: "A Vision for a Cross-Sector Society" together with the Keio Cross-Sector Platform (Keio University Global Research Institute). Session 1, "The Cutting Edge of Diversifying Philanthropy," takes place on October 3, 5:00-6:30 PM at Keio University's Mita Campus, featuring USJF Japan Representative Haruto Okabe, Minami Sesumi (Save the Children Japan), and Makiko Yamazoe (MIDAS Foundation). The Doing Good Index 2026, a biennial study assessing the environment for social investment across Asia, comes to Japan on October 1, as the Centre for Asian Philanthropy and Society - CAPS shares its findings for the first time at Shizenkan University in Tokyo, co-organized with USJF. CAPS Co-Founder and CEO Ruth Shapiro will deliver opening remarks, with Director for Northeast Asia Heesu Jang presenting research findings, followed by two panels exploring how Japan can empower social-sector organizations to sustain and deepen their impact. Each year, at the United States-Japan Foundation, forty rising leaders — twenty from the United States, twenty from Japan — come together for a week built around dialogue, trust, and collaboration. This is the US-Japan Leadership Program (USJLP), and applications are now open for its 2027-2028 class.

Over two years, Delegates take part in immersive week-long conferences and join a network of more than 570 leaders across sectors working to strengthen ties between the two countries. Candidates must hold U.S. or Japanese citizenship, be 28 to 42 years old, and be proven leaders, accomplished in their fields. Applications are due Monday, November 16, 2026.
