The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune.

With a mission to lead, develop and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities.

We kicked off our first community service activity of the program year at the only free restauraunt in NYC, Refettorio Harlem (Refettorio Harlem)! We volunteered alongside a dedicated team of community volunteers & staff.

During our shift, our team helped to plate and serve approximately 500 meals to members of the community. We’re grateful for the opportunity to give back, connect with others, and make a meaningful impact together 💜.

We weren’t going to let a little rain stop us from representing at the 2026 African American Day Parade () ! NCNW New York State Coalition was in the building, proudly represented by sections from across NYC inlcuding NCNW Manhattan (New York), NCNWQueensCounty,East Bronx Section NCNW , NCNW North Bronx Section & Ncnwcoopcity Bethune 💜

We had a blast and we're already looking forward to doing it all again next year❤️🖤💚!

We’re excited to kick off a new programming year by celebrating the success of our annual Backpack Giveaway! 🎒

Thanks to the incredible support of our membership and our continued partnership with United Federation of Teachers, we filled and distributed hundreds of backpacks to students during Harlem Week. We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this event a success!

Now, it’s time to look ahead! Join us for our 1st General Body Meeting of the new programming year on 🗓 Saturday, September 12th at 10:30 AM.

Harlem Roots Community Garden, founded by Sister Chanel, is a vibrant space for learning, growth, and community. For our Earth Day 🌏service project, we volunteered at the garden distributing saplings 🌳(thank you !) and sharing snacks, beverages, and delicious bread 🥖donated from with local residents.

We had an incredible time earlier this month celebrating our 2026 Esther McCall Awardee, Robin Martin! 💜 Robin currently serves as our section’s Financial Secretary and Manhattan Section BHRP Committee Chair, and her dedication truly embodies the spirit of this honor.

The Esther McCall Award is the Manhattan Section’s highest recognition, presented annually to a member who goes above and beyond in service and commitment. Named in honor of the esteemed Esther McCall, a former member whose legacy continues to inspire, this award represents excellence, leadership, service and impact.

Earlier this year, our section president visited the historic Mary McLeod Bethune Council House () in Washington, DC—the first headquarters of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and the final home of our visionary founder, Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune.

As we celebrate Women’s History Month, we honor Dr. Bethune’s extraordinary legacy and the generations of women who have advanced leadership, equity, and opportunity in communities across the nation. Her work continues to inspire our mission and reminds us of the power of women leading change.
