OUT NOW: I Was Supposed to Have a Baby: Dr. Aimee Baron on Infertility, Loss, and Finding Connection
What happens when the life you imagined doesn’t unfold the way you expected? For many individuals and couples, the journey to parenthood can be marked by infertility, miscarriage, pregnancy loss, unanswered questions, and profound grief. Yet these experiences are often surrounded by silence, leaving people to navigate some of life’s most painful moments feeling isolated and misunderstood.
On this episode of Exit Strategy, Exit Strategy host Stephanie Garry speaks with Dr. Aimee Baron, a pediatrician and founder of I Was Supposed To Have A Baby, a nonprofit dedicated to supporting individuals and families in the Jewish community experiencing infertility, pregnancy loss, infant loss, and other challenges on the path to building a family.
Dr. Baron’s own experience with infertility and repeated pregnancy losses inspired her to create the community she wished had existed when she needed it most. Through personal stories, education, and emotional support, her organization helps people feel seen, understood, and less alone. It also encourages the broader community to reconsider how we speak about family, parenthood, and loss.
Together, we explore the grief of losing not only a pregnancy or a child, but also the future one had envisioned. We discuss why well-intentioned questions and comments can sometimes deepen someone’s pain, how friends and family can offer meaningful support, and why making room for difficult conversations matters.
This is a conversation about the expectations we carry, the losses we don’t always know how to name, and the extraordinary difference it can make when someone simply listens. Because sometimes the most meaningful thing we can offer another person is the reassurance that they do not have to go through it alone.
