Announcing the 2026 Hemsley Lighting Programs Internships and Howell Binkley Fellow!

Ashley Christensen (achristensenm.com) is a lighting designer originally from Portland, OR. She is an M.F.A Lighting Design candidate at Indiana University Bloomington (2026). As a lighting designer as well as a sound designer, and musician, her design work strives to combine each of her backgrounds in order to find the richness where the three intersect. This pushes her to find innovative ways to communicate through light, helping her to find the beats in a moment onstage, the musicality in a transition, and to strengthen her collaboration with the sound or score of a work. In her free time, she enjoys baking, reading, and playing harp. Ashley will intern with the lighting departments of the San Francisco Opera, The New York City Ballet, and The Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre from July through February.

AJ Rose (ajrosedesigns.com) is a lighting designer originally from Michigan, finishing their MFA program at Texas State University in San Marcos, TX. AJ is passionate about enhancing the artistry of the shows they work on with their lighting design. When not in a theatre, he enjoys reading, going to the movies, and hanging out with his cat Celia. They are so excited to continue their professional lighting journey this summer with the Hemsley Internship Program! AJ will intern under the guidance of Paul Miller on the Gene Kelly Awards, Pittsburgh
Civic Light Opera, and with Rob Denton at the Muny in St. Louis.

Jules Cabrera (www.julescabdesign.com) is a theatrical lighting designer born and raised in Austin, Texas. She holds a BFA in Theatre from Texas State University and an M.F.A. in Lighting Design and Technology from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She is thrilled by the opportunity to work with Ryan O’Gara and Amanda Zieve, and intends to make the most of every moment and connection. Jules hopes to move to New York City, and is excited to carry what she learns from this opportunity every step of the way. She values storytelling in all of its forms, especially through light.

During the Hemsley Portfolio Review Weekend, students spent the afternoon at MainLight checking out all the cool gear brought in from different manufacturers. Thank you for a Saturday full of cool technology (and some lunch 😁)!

Matt Pagliaro of Rosco presented Paul Miller with the annual proceeds from the sales of R361 gel this past weekend. Matt told us how much it means to him to be a part of the Portfolio Review weekend. Rosco 361 was developed with the intent of donating all proceeds from this filter to Hemsley Lighting Programs. This year‘s check of $2000 brings the running total to over $50,000 dollars. A HUUUUGE THANK YOU TO ROSCO FOR YOUR DECADES OF SUPPORT!!

Honestly? These last few months have been amazing. I can't describe how much I've grown, personally and professionally, from this internship.

To the Hemsley board, thank you so much for this opportunity. The things I've learned here and the people I've met will always be part of my journey.

Justin, Davida, Dan, and India, my summer/fall in San Francisco was truly one for the books! I hope you're ready for me to be in your lives forever, cause I'm never letting y'all go. Love y'all and the SFO LX team down!

Yi-Chung, Natalia, David, Jameson, and the whole Ailey team and City Center crew, being part of your season was so special! Y'all gave me an appreciation for modern ballet that I will always hold near and dear to my heart. I plan to come back every season!

John, Emily, Maddy, Penny, Jackie, Angelina, Megan, Iris, and everybody at City Ballet, thank you so much for taking such good care of me. I could feel everyday how invested you all were in the art as well as my personal well-being. I love y'all and y'all better save my number because you haven't seen the last of me :) What a great place to end the internship.

I feel so much more ready to step into the world because of all the beautiful relationships I've had the chance to cultivate over the past few months.

For now, I'll be here in NYC. Follow me on my design page ._.of._.light and hit me up via email [email protected] for all your lighting needs :)

Catch you on the flip side!
-Rae

It's been a little while since the City Center Season came to an end but I'd be remiss if I didn't post a goodbye to the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre. Being a part of Black art, surrounded by so many diverse and friendly faces, made my heart swell. I had a truly tremendous experience working with Yi-Chung, Natalia, David, Jameson, and everyone else in the AADT family. And the City Center crew was top notch! Missing everyone already!

Before 2025 ended I was fortunate enough to be able to shadow two really cool projects!

The first, Bug, I didn't get any pictures of because I was a little awestruck walking into a Broadway rehearsal for the first time. But I had a wonderful time shadowing Heather Gilbert and Vicky Bain ! I learned a lot about being in the room and what it looks like when you really vibe with your team! Thanks so much for working with my Ailey schedule to let me come visit.

Week one-ish done in New York City!

A whirlwind start with the annual New York City Ballet production of The Nutcracker where I helped manage focus and notes (Shout out to paparazzi extraordinaire Penny). Also added some holiday flair to the tech table in the Hemsley Tradition.

Then over to City Center for load in for Alvin Ailey's City Center Season! I'll be here for a few weeks, then back to NYCB for their winter season.

It's getting cold here but being from Nebraska and having spent the last few winters in Detroit, I feel like I'm pretty prepared for my first winter in the city.

I'm truly having a blast, y'all :)

Happy (Belated) Opening to The Monkey King! This behemoth was a wild and crazy process from start to finish. This beauty was so big that i spent most of it helping out backstage so excuse the lack of pics from the audience hahaha. I've never seen anything like it to be quite honest and it was amazing to get to witness so many elements like lighting, puppetry, automation, scenery, projections, costumes, sound, and pretty much everything i can think of except Pyro, come together to tell this classic story. A truly amazing end to my time at San Francisco Opera (which will get a seperate post:) ).
