GEF Small Grants Programme

GEF Small Grants Programme Established in 1992, the GEF Small Grants Programme is implemented by UNDP on behalf of the GEF.

The main focal areas of the programme are climate change abatement and adaptation, conservation of biodiversity, protection of international waters, reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants and prevention of land degradation. The programme is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as a corporate programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on b

ehalf of the GEF partnership, and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). To date the program funding from the GEF is aproximately US$401 million. In adittion, the program has raised US$407 million from other partners in cash or in-kind equivalents.

In the heart of the Mongolian steppe, a crucial lifeline is fraying.
Nearly 77% of the country's territory is affected by land degradation, threatening the future of traditional pastoralist communities who have lived on these rangelands for generations.
Yet, where a lake once vanished over 70 years ago, water now flows again.

With support from the Global Environment Facility GEF Small Grants Programme, implemented by United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, women-led herder groups in Burd district organized to restore their degraded wetlands. Their hard work successfully revived a long-lost lake, securing water for 15,000 animals and bringing back biodiversity.

As the world turns its attention to the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification , this story is a powerful example of what is possible when local communities lead the way in the fight against land degradation.
