GEF Small Grants Programme

GEF Small Grants Programme Established in 1992, the GEF Small Grants Programme is implemented by UNDP on behalf of the GEF.

The main focal areas of the programme are climate change abatement and adaptation, conservation of biodiversity, protection of international waters, reduction of the impact of persistent organic pollutants and prevention of land degradation. The programme is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF) as a corporate programme, implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) on b

ehalf of the GEF partnership, and executed by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS). To date the program funding from the GEF is aproximately US$401 million. In adittion, the program has raised US$407 million from other partners in cash or in-kind equivalents.

Across Colombia’s Guaviare department, a powerful transformation is underway. Today, following the jaguar’s trail is a privilege. But not long ago, those same trails were followed with shotguns, not cameras.

Through the Jaguar Protection Corridor, local farmers, tour guides, and community organizations are working together to protect one of the world’s most iconic species while strengthening their own livelihoods. With support from the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Programme (GEF SGP), implemented by United Nations Development Programme - UNDP, communities are leading conservation efforts that reflect local knowledge and priorities.

From monitoring wildlife with camera traps to planting native trees and community‑based ecotourism, these efforts are reducing human–jaguar conflict, protecting entire landscapes, and fostering a new generation of environmental leadership.
