Crítica Latinoamericana is a research collective that devises situations for the activation of critical reflection on problems of Latin American culture. While our work takes place at the intersection of literature, art, philosophy, visual cultures, and politics, we are not committed to an interdisciplinary ethos so much as to the analysis of critical objects or problems that refuse to figure entirely or necessarily in any one discipline. Among these objects or problems we give pride of place to what has been called Latin America; to its past, present, and future representations and imagined forms; to the discourses, textualities, and virtualities that have been stitched and unstitched around it; and to the history of its geopolitical and cultural constitution. Latin America is, in this sense, the place that serves as our point of departure, but also our first object of criticism. Like Neurath’s boat, which must be repaired at sea, we assume that criticism must keep to the antipodes of all safe harbors. Crítica Latinoamericana thus seeks to illuminate the problematic cultural dimension of Latin America through collective projects of criticism. Our hope is that these projects will foster new circuits of knowledge and new connections among academics and non-academics alike. Iris Zavala says that if we understand culture as a means for knowing and transforming the social and the political, then it is a site to be occupied. This space of knowledge and transformation is where Crítica Latinoamericana sets up shop.

Psychoanalysis in El Barrio is a film that details the excitement and challenges of clinical work with Hispanic patients who are affected by poverty. Winner of the PEP 2015 Video Grant, the film captures the complexities of working across issues related to culture, class, immigration, language, ethnicity and race. It challenges the not-uncommon notion that Hispanic patients affected by poverty can only benefit from therapies that rely on very concrete interventions. The documentary features renowned clinicians, including: Carlos Padrón (Venezuela); Christopher Christian (Puerto Rico); Daniel Jose Gaztambide (Puerto Rico); David Ramirez (Mexico); Ernesto Mujica (Cuba); Maria de Lourdes Mattei (Puerto Rico), Patricia Gherovici (Argentina); Rafael Art. Javier (Santo Domingo); Ricardo Ainslie (Mexico). The film was made possible by a generous grant from Psychoanalytic Electronic Publishing (PEP) with the support of the Institute for Psychoanalytic Training and Research (IPTAR).

Wine reception beginning at 6:30PM.
