i woke startled around 3:45 AM.
(That tends to be a time I wake up)

Something in my body shifted.
I tried calling my older sister, who’d just gotten in to say her final goodbye to our dad, who was dying of an unrelenting synovial sarcoma.
She didn’t answer.
It didn’t matter. I knew the world was forever shifting.
She texted back an hour later, saying he was breathing heavily but there.
I didn’t sleep.

Around 7 AM i almost called again, but made the decision to fill out the (lenghly when you have 4 kids) “blue forms” for back to school.

I’ll call when these are done, I thought.
This will be my motivation to get them done quickly.

I signed the final line and picked up the phone.

I was met with weeping.
He just died, Amanda! He is dead!

🙏🏻I lost my dad 6 months ago today. 🗓️
I really can’t even write that and believe it.

I had no idea what a rock he was in my life — in the lives of thousands, until now he is gone.

I miss him everyday.
I’ve seen him once in my dreams, and he’s visited Larkin in the bookstore at least once.
I’ve seen the touch of his spirit countless times, and felt the wind of his presence and the winks of connection too many times to count.

it’s true they never leave us,
AND
they do leave us.

i love you so much, Dad.
we are still winning.

Shoo. We knew today’s ramadan lunar new year solar eclipse end of the snake onto the firehorse fat tuesday mardi gras mash up was a lot. And now we also deeply honor the Rev Jesse Jackson.

Repost from

Even as Rev. Jesse Jackson, the man, has died, the afterlife of this ancestor has begun through us. Through our undying struggle against racism. Through our eternal organizing of rainbow coalitions against resurgent ethnostates. Through our endless re-conquering of power’s army of despair. Through our everlasting striving to “Keep Hope Alive!” Rest peacefully, Rev. Jackson, in the force of our beautiful struggle. 🕊️💔

Attending the annual interfaith breakfast the past four years has been an exercise in mental gymnastics & uncertainty. For many of us, the faith of eric adams is foreign to we who believe in freedom.

We wore “housing for all” stickers, disrupted prayers that twisted liberation, and raised posters for immigrants.

BUT LAST FRIDAY!!!

Was a joyful balm that i do not take for granted.

nobody has a monopoly on religion nor should any religion being imposed on any New York City resident.

But having a mayor who is curious about and welcomes the Stranger, recites the Quran, and preaches about abolishing ice & the faith of a mother who works overtime to make rent & an elder taking care of their community ignites me anew to work alongside my siblings to bring about the kin-dom of God … however you define her.

For more reasons than I’d like to count, I was depleted this morning. didn’t feel like hitting the streets in sub zero (whose counting) temps again — EVEN THOUGH the stakes have arguably never been higher. I heard rumblings that my kids’ school was participating in the youth-led walkout in solidarity with youth in Minnesota. I inquired and listened to see whether my kids wanted to ...
Hearing they were ‘probably into it,’ I offered to walk alongside them once outside ... you know .... just in case. ;)

i haven’t been this inspired in a long time.
listening to the confident high school announcement then seeing student after student file out of class …

the tears pulled out by young resistance felt so damn good.

the youth are always on the right side of history.
may we listen.
always.
all ways.

the kids are alright.

abolish ice.

Final picture was this day 9 years ago.
It’s too much to hold.

I believe that we will win.

What shutting it down looks like today.
This is an awful time.
It’s going to be a helluva long ride.
Take care of each other.
Build deep.
Organize well.
Find the magick.

We are all Minnesota.

In response to sister calls from and , and are teaming up to host a virtual teach-in on January 21st at 6:30pm ET. You’re invited!

Together we’ll learn from early childhood educators about how we might engage young children in the work of reclaiming MLK’s legacy.

In 2024, published “The Many Stories of Our Beloved Community” about the anti-bias and anti-racist values and practices of the nature centered early learning community that she directs in Atlanta. During this session, we’ll get to learn directly from Jessica Horsley, a longtime early childhood educator who has worked with this group of children and their families from the time they began in the Infant Living Room.

This teach-in will be interactive, so bring a journal or a buddy with whom you feel comfortable sharing your honest thoughts and feelings. Many of the teachers and families at the Highlander School use the books in the series to support their practice, and Dr. will be there to share strategies that all caregivers and educators can use to meaningfully engage young children in activism.

Last week 4 Faith leaders in the East Village asked if people might need a place to grieve and gather in light of increasing violence in our communities at the hands of I%E. In five days we put together a simple service and loosely invited the community.

Over 350 people poured into the church Monday night.

we reminded each other that there are more of us than them,
that the arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice,
and that none of us are free until all of us are free

We shall overcome…

someday
