Today marks the start of LGBTQIA+ History Month. 🏳️‍🌈

New York City is the birthplace of Pride. At NYC Pride, we protect and honor that heritage to light the path ahead, especially now as anti-LGBTQIA+ legislation and a shifting political landscape too often leave our Trans and nonbinary siblings behind.

For the next 31 days, we’re looking back at the people and moments that paved the path we march on.

This month, we hosted our 2026 Volunteer Thank You Party at God’s Love We Deliver to celebrate the 750+ volunteers who made Pride happen this year.

NYC Pride is a small nonprofit, and we rely on volunteers to bring the March, PrideFest, Youth Pride and our year-round programs to life.

To our volunteers: Thank you. You are the heart and soul of our work, and we’re so grateful for your dedication and enthusiasm.

In recognition of National Coming Out Day, NYC Pride is hosting a community-centered rally at the Stonewall National Monument on October 11th.

Amongst a slate of speakers from the community, NYC Pride will create a welcoming space for individuals who may be coming out for the first time, re-coming out in a supportive space, or sharing their coming out stories.

Participation will always be voluntary, with no expectation that anyone must publicly disclose their identity.

Our county wouldn’t host a Pride event, so we built one ourselves.”

After threat to cancel Sumner County, Tennessee’s Pride, this Queer-owned farm decided to step up and build Affirming Sumner.

Today, Affirming Sumner is a thriving gathering of local vendors, families, children and LGBTQIA+ musicians seeing themselves celebrated in their own hometown.

We mourn the loss of trailblazing advocate, Gloria Steinem.

Though Gloria’s feminist activism did not always include trans folks, she serves as a testament to the power of learning and evolving. As she grew to better understand trans people and their fight — and their integral role in the fight for gender liberation — she stood by them fiercely and proudly.

In her 2020 New York Times letter denouncing the elimination of trans discrimination protections, she and co-author S. Mona Sinha write: “As feminists, we stand for equal rights for all. We invite your readers to join us in the the struggle to achieve full civil rights and dignity for all members of the human family.”

We thank Gloria for her commitment to the fight, and carry her spirit of empathy and activism forward as we continue the fight for trans and LGBTQ+ liberation.

Early Monday morning, Vincent Siquieros and Cameron Capara were murdered outside Venture-N, a neighborhood gay bar in Tucson, Arizona. Tucson police are currently investigating the incident as a hate crime, and authorities report the suspect was carrying a list of LGBTQIA+ businesses.

Our bars, clubs, and local gathering spots are meant to be safe spaces for our community. Tragedies like this are a painful reminder that too often, they are not.

As this year marks the 10th anniversary of the Pulse nightclub shooting, we are once again forced to confront a horrific reality: anti-LGBTQIA+ violence remains a severe and rising threat in America.

Our hearts break for the loved ones of Vincent and Cameron.

NYC stands in solidarity with the city of Tucson and the entire LGBTQIA+ community.
