WaterAid America

WaterAid America WaterAid has one goal: to change the world through clean water, decent toilets and good hygiene. Millions more are unable to attend school.
(1)

Clean, safe water is something most of us take for granted, but nearly 750 million people do not have access to it and 2.3 billion have nowhere safe and clean to go to the toilet. As a result, 1,400 children die every day from easily prevented diarrheal diseases. Millions of women are unable to work because they spend so much time caring for sick children, collecting water. Together with local org

anizations, WaterAid uses practical, sustainable solutions to provide safe water, effective sanitation and hygiene education to the poorest people in developing countries. WaterAid works with individuals and their families, paying special attention to the most vulnerable people, to help them set up, operate, manage and maintain their own projects.

🧐 Did you also need to zoom in on that last one?

Oceans do an incredible amount of work to keep the Earth cool and its inhabitants hydrated, but did you know that available drinkable freshwater is as limited as this?

We’re grateful for access to this precious resource, and we work to ensure that water stewardship is integrated into our project to keep water flowing reliably and sustainably.

Teaching how to make reusable sanitary pads had some unexpected learnings for Ms. Tienia, Director of the Professional Training Center CherEnfant, in Burkina Faso.

"We were really taken with the idea of making reusable sanitary pads. As we have a training centre, with the sewing course, it was really easy and it helped a lot of girls. In fact, when we looked at the situation in schools, we could see that menstruation was causing some girls to be absent or even drop out. This prevented girls from following and continuing their studies normally."

To be able to reduce costs for people month to month, and keep students in class is real local impact. We applaud women, like Ms. Tienia, working to empower her community through hygiene education. We're proud to support them with training to help reach more people with tools like these.

“Getting associated with WaterAid has been a blessing for me,” Kavita says, “I have the economic assistance to be able to provide more for my daughters and look after my mother. I have dignity in my work — people support me, listen to me. I am happy.”

Kavita had previously supported her family as a daily wage earner, but thanks to a life-changing opportunity through WaterAid India, she became a “Jal Sakhti” (a water friend). Chosen after key consideration and discussion with the self-help groups working in her village, Kavita learned about the concept of water conservation and hygiene. She was trained in water quality testing and how to conduct a survey to identify families in need of water access. A Jal Sakti’s role is to share this knowledge to improve health and hygiene throughout the community.

Support for these types of education roles are critical to raising hygiene awareness, and in helping to identify and solve water access issues at a grassroots level.

Thanks to support from partners, like .churchofjesuschrist , we can uplift more workers, like Kavita, through the dignity of work.

This Bike to Work Day, we're thinking about a very different kind of commute. While millions of people around the world will hop on their bikes for a healthy, feel-good ride to work, for others the distance is anything but fun.

Meet Belita in Malawi. Her bike ride looks a little different, as it fluctuates with local water levels. When Lake Chilwa in Malawi runs dry, the market moves deeper inside the lake, and so does Belita’s journey to earn a living. When it’s very low, Belita leaves home between 3am and 4am, cycling hours through the dark just to reach the trading post by 6am.

"It was very rigorous," she shares.

But when the rains come and the lake fills again, everything changes. The market returns closer to shore, the journey shrinks, and life gets a little easier.

"Today is the first day I have resumed my business of selling rice porridge. I was able to wake up around 5:30am and I did not have to cycle a very long distance. It was convenient to do business here. I have more time to sleep now. Above all, I am able to get back home to my children in case there is any emergency."

Belita can even bring her children with her now, something that’s not possible when the lake is low and the distance too great.

But she knows this is temporary. When the dry season returns, so does the long ride. The shrinking of Lake Chilwa isn't just a weather pattern. It's climate change. And it's getting worse.

"Whenever the lake is dry, our lives are shattered. We are left hopeless unlike now when the lake is full."

This Bike to Work Day, enjoy your ride. But also remember the millions of people whose daily distance isn't a choice, but a consequence of a water crisis we can still solve.
