Making strides against breast cancer...

Some of our Early LIFE staff and friends joined this walk in support of breast cancer survivors on our team.

We were part of the roughly 50,000 participants who turned out for this 4-mile event.

American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is a movement to raise funds for lifesaving research and programs. The goal? As ACS says, “to ensure everyone has a fair and just opportunity to live a longer, healthier life free from breast cancer.”

Island Harvest, a key provider for our New LIFE Center food pantry, held a press conference that featured our client Christina Joseph.

She gave heartfelt testimonial about being a mother to a child with special needs, the inadequacy of SNAP benefits, and the loving, dignified atmosphere of our Long Island client-choice pantry. Here, people can shop for what they want, feel welcomed, and — in her words — not be "treated as a number."

Do your tastes run savory or sweet?

For Hispanic Heritage Month, LSSNY’s Ruth Acevedo shared her mother’s famous arroz con leche soup:

- Boil half a cup of rice in saucepan in water until soft

- Leave some water in the rice, then add 1 full can of evaporated milk

- Add salt to your taste

- Let it cook until it starts to boil

- Serve as a soup

- Pro tip: After the rice is soft, the water should stay a little above the rice

Says Ruth, “I’m convinced this version of arroz con leche exists only in my mother’s town in Puerto Rico, which is Camuy. I’m only aware of one other person outside of my family who makes this dish, and that person comes from Camuy, Puerto Rico as well. All others seem to make arroz con leche as a dessert.”

Where do you fall in this great debate: Should arroz con leche be made and served as a soup or a dessert? Let us know in the comments below.

And Happy !

More than a pantry.

Did you know that, in addition to client-choice groceries, household supplies, and pet food, LSSNY’s New LIFE Center in Franklin Square has a section devoted to newborns? We have layettes, diapers, and formula — necessities for our clients and their families.

The Women’s Ministry at The Life Lutheran Church in Old Westbury recently hosted a baby shower in support of our Layette Program.

For 26 years, Diane Kelly, a dedicated New LIFE Center volunteer, has led the Layette Program following her retirement as a school principal. Her commitment and generosity continue to make a meaningful difference in the lives of families in our community.

Says Program Director Lynn Butte, “We are grateful to the members of Life Lutheran Church for their continued generosity and support of the New LIFE Center and its mission. Thank you for helping make a difference!”

LSSNY provides trusted, community-rooted support that meets urgent needs and builds lasting change.

These are not just any backpacks. These are two of the 374 backpacks distributed to clients of our New LIFE Center in Franklin Square, New York.

Thanks to the generosity of nearly 30 local churches, we were able to provide these new backpacks and school supplies to children (Pre-K through high school), as well as school supplies for approximately 50 individuals enrolled in vocational and trade programs.

Says Lynn Butte, Program Director, “We are so grateful to our generous church partners for helping local children start the school year prepared, confident, and ready to learn! 🙏 374 backpacks…374 reasons to smile! 📚❤️ Thank you for helping us make a difference! 💙”

"And when great souls die,
after a period peace blooms,
slowly and always
irregularly. Spaces fill
with a kind of
soothing electric vibration.
Our senses, restored, never
to be the same, whisper to us.
They existed. They existed.
We can be. Be and be
better. For they existed."

― Maya Angelou

On the 25th anniversary of this tragic day, we remember the victims and also how New Yorkers came together to support one another.

We did not break. We rebuilt. We persevered.
