East Side House Settlement

East Side House Settlement Our goal is to help motivated students graduate from high school, enroll in college, and build the skills necessary to secure a good job.

A community-based organization serving the South Bronx and surrounding communities that focuses on education and technology training as a gateway out of poverty and into economic and civic opportunity. East Side House is a community-based social service organization that recognizes education as the gateway out of poverty for the children and families we serve. To do so, we work with schools, commu

nity centers and other partners to bring quality education, resources and opportunities to individuals and families through a wide range of programs. Operating from 28 different program locations, East Side House helps approximately 10,000 residents of the South Bronx and surrounding communities improve their lives each year by providing access to quality education and technology training.

Today, we honor Juneteenth - a day that commemorates June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation.
Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder of the ongoing work to build a more just and equitable future. It is a time to recognize the strength, resilience, achievements, and lasting contributions of Black communities throughout history and today.
At East Side House, we remain committed to creating opportunities, expanding access, and building stronger communities where everyone has the chance to thrive.
đź–¤ Today, we invite you to take a moment to reflect, learn, and honor the significance of Juneteenth. How are you recognizing the day? Share with us below.

What happens when young people are given the space to tell their stories?
Something incredible.
Students at Lehman YABC recently became published authors through a collection of essays inspired by Freedom Writers. Their words reflect personal experiences, resilience, hope, and the courage it takes to share your voice with others.
This project was about more than writing a book, it was about creating a space where students felt heard, valued, and empowered to tell their stories on their own terms.
We’re so proud of these talented young authors and grateful to the educators who encouraged them every step of the way.
đź’™ Help us celebrate! Leave a message of encouragement for our student authors in the comments. Your words can make a lasting impact.

Growth doesn’t happen by accident, it happens when we challenge ourselves, support one another, and never stop learning.
Last week, our East Side House team stepped away from our daily routines for our annual Staff Retreat at Club Getaway in Kent, CT. Surrounded by nature, we spent time strengthening our teamwork through problem-solving activities, team-building challenges, and experiences that pushed us outside our comfort zones.
The retreat reminded us that excellence is a journey, not a destination. By investing in ourselves and each other, we’re better equipped to show up every day for the children, families, and communities we serve.
Here’s to continuing to learn, grow, and be better, together. 💙

The rally planned for June 16th to support nonprofit advances has been cancelled as we have just learned that Mayor Mamdani intends to honor the city law to issue 50% advances for human service city contracts!
We thank all those who agreed and planned to attend as the Mayor Mamdani’s decision happened after pushback and the planned rally “by hundreds of nonprofits that serve needy New Yorkers.”

At East Side House, we see every day how public contracts become real services for real people — students supported, families fed, young adults connected to work, and older adults cared for.
When payments are delayed, the burden does not disappear. It shifts onto nonprofits, staff, and the communities already carrying the most.
Contract advances are about stability, fairness, and honoring the City’s commitments. East Side House is proud to stand with our partners in calling for the full implementation of Local Law 156.
We, as New Yorkers, are better than this. Our communities cannot wait, and the system must work as hard as the people delivering these services every day.

This past weekend, East Side House Settlement partnered with The WVI Dolphin Foundation, Hydro-Québec, and Champlain Hudson Power Express for the Leadership + Mentorship Program Module: Civics in Action.

Through engaging discussions on leadership, civic responsibility, and community engagement, participants explored what it means to create positive change - and then put those lessons into action by packing and distributing food to community members in need.
Thank you to our partners for helping empower the next generation of leaders while strengthening the communities we proudly serve.
