The Project Management Institute New York City Chapter (PMINYC) is one of the largest chapters in PMI with close to 3,000 members. All are welcome.

Our membership ranges from corporate leaders, consultants and project professionals at Fortune 500 companies, mid-size and smaller firms, across all levels of the organization, and spans industries including -- financial services, life sciences, healthcare, pharmaceuticals, consumer markets, technology & telecom, legal, etc. Most of our members are PMI credentialed (i.e. PMP, PgMP, CAPM, etc. ) and have worked in the project management field for many years but a fair amount are new to the profession too.

Making Sustainability Real: From Opportunity to Lasting Impact

What does it take to move sustainability from a good idea to something that creates lasting impact?

During Climate Week NYC, PMI New York City partnered with BNY's Environmental Sustainability Ambassadors to bring together project professionals and sustainability leaders for Making Sustainability Real: A Candid Conversation Where Sustainability Meets Business, People, Decisions, and Action.

Moderated by Seechung, CSPP, from PMINYC's Corporate Sustainability Outreach team, the panel featured Cardone of , Kalia, P.G. of , and Servranckx of Gooding, exploring what happens between recognizing an opportunity and creating impact at scale.

A few themes stood out.
Sustainability opportunities can start in very different places: a business need, a community challenge, a professional responsibility, or simply seeing a better way to approach a problem.

Turning those opportunities into action requires understanding what matters to the people involved. As Tara Cardone put it, "Meet them where they are at." Building the case can mean validating demand and economics, finding the right partners, or translating technical information into something decision-makers can act on.

Even a strong idea still has to work in the real world. Resources, competing priorities, organizational behaviors, and the challenge of getting people to do something differently all influence whether an idea takes hold. Partnerships, education, and standardization can then help successful ideas extend beyond a single initiative and scale.

One theme connected much of the conversation: decisions.

What we buy, prioritize, invest in, or choose to do differently can have sustainability impacts, even when we don't think of them as "sustainability decisions."

For project professionals, that connects directly to how we plan and deliver our work and the decisions we make along the way. The Management Institute and Project Management (GPM) Certified Sustainable Project Professional (CSPP)™ credential provides a structured approach to identifying and considering sustainability impacts as part of project decision-making.
