Shia Muslim Council

Shia Muslim Council The Shia Muslim community in the United States has witnessed a rapid increase in its size and proportion within the past few decades.

The Shia Muslim Council (SMC) of Southern California is a united and independent umbrella organization representing Shia Islamic centers, schools, and charitable institutions across the region. In the southern California region alone, there are now 22 Shia Islamic centers, mosques, and organizations. These organizations represent the wide spectrum of various Shia Muslim communities in terms of bac

kground, nationality, language, ethnicity, and outlooks. Such a rapid growth of the Shia Muslim community in southern California, coupled with the need for organization, cooperation, and representation, prompted a number of dedicated southern California Shia Muslim community leaders and members to come together and – after two years of continuous meetings and discussions – collectively form a independent non-profit umbrella organization, the Shia Muslim Council of Southern California (SMC). The primary objective of SMC is to provide members with a platform to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, to enhance and support both individual and joint member religious, social, and educational initiatives, and to cooperate regarding a vast array of issues pertaining to the promotion of the Shia Muslim community specifically, as well as to the general larger Muslim community in the region and nation. These objectives will be pursued in cooperation with SMC members, as well as other relevant Muslim and non-Muslim organizations. The Shia Muslim Council of Southern California (SMC) is an independent umbrella organization comprising of various Shia Muslim centers, mosques, and organizations in southern California. Currently, SMC is composed of 17 member organizations.

بِسْمِ اللهِ الرَّحْمٰنِ الرَّحِيْمِ
Eid Al Adha Mubarak from the Shia Muslim Council of Southern California!

On this blessed day, we celebrate the profound devotion of Prophet Ibrahim (AS), a man who surrendered everything to the will of Allah, and whose unwavering faith became a light for all humanity across the ages.

Imam Al-Sadiq (AS) reminds us in Bihar al-Anwar: "The day of sacrifice is the greatest of days before Allah." Today, we reflect on what it truly means to sacrifice: not only in the tradition of Qurbani, but in our hearts, surrendering our ego, our attachments, and our fears in service to Allah and our community.

As pilgrims complete the sacred rites of Hajj in the holy city of Mecca, we stand with them in spirit, united as one Ummah, regardless of distance.

Please watch this special Eid message from SMC leadership as we share our prayers, hopes, and gratitude with you and your families. May Allah (SWT) accept your worship, bless your sacrifice, and fill your homes with joy, mercy, and barakah.

Eid Mubarak to you and your loved ones!

The Day of Arafah is here — the greatest day of the year.

Today, the 9th of Dhul Hijjah, millions of pilgrims stand on the plains of Arafat, and even from our homes in Southern California, we can share in the mercy and blessings of this sacred day.

On this day, Imam Hussain (AS) stood on the plains of Arafat and raised his hands in one of the most profound supplications ever uttered. He called out to Allah:

"O Allah, make me fear You as though I see You, grant me happiness through piety towards You, and let me not be wretched by sinning against You."
— Dua Arafah of Imam Hussain (AS), Bihar al-Anwar, Vol. 98

This is our inheritance. This is our tradition. A living link to the Ahlul-Bayt (AS), renewed every year on this day.

This is a day of du'a, of tawbah, of reflection, and of generosity. Sadaqa given on the Day of Arafah carries immense reward. Let your giving today be an act of worship.

Today, do what you can:

- Observe the recommended fast
- Perform Ghusl and 2 Rak'ah Salah
- Recite Dua Arafah of Imam Hussain (AS)
-Send Salawat upon the Prophet (PBUH) and his holy family (AS)
- Visit the Ziyarah of Imam Hussain (AS), even from afar
- Give Sadaqa and support your community

"O most Hearing! O most Seeing! O swiftest in reckoning! O most Merciful of all those who show mercy!"

Support your community on this blessed day. Every act of sadaqa today carries the weight of this sacred occasion.

“Indeed, to Allah we belong and to Him we shall return.” — Qur’an 2:156

This week, our community grieved together.

The Shia Muslim Council joined more than 2,000 mourners in a San Diego park for the Janazah of three brave men who lost their lives trying to stop an attack on the city’s largest mosque. They were fathers. Sons. Neighbors. They saw danger approaching their place of worship and they stepped forward. That courage cost them their lives, but it saved others.

President Khalil Dewji and Trustee Dr. Sayed Moustafa Qazwini were there on behalf of the Council, standing shoulder to shoulder with thousands in prayer.

A memorial gathering followed at the Islamic Society of Orange County (ISOC), where community leaders, families, and worshippers from across Southern California came together to honor the martyrs. At ISOC, the Shia Muslim Council offered our deepest condolences to the families of the fallen and to every member of the Muslim community feeling the weight of this loss. We also reaffirmed something important: that we stand with you, every mosque, every family, every community grieving right now.

We ask Allah (SWT) to grant the martyrs the highest stations of Jannah, to give their families patience and peace, and to protect every place of worship and every soul who prays within.

Our hearts are with the families. An attack on one mosque is an attack on all of us.

Please keep the martyrs, their loved ones, and the San Diego Muslim community in your du’as 🤲

"Whoever kills a soul…it is as if he had slain all mankind. And whoever saves one, it is as if he had saved all mankind." (Qur’an 5:32)

The Shia Muslim Council is devastated by today’s horrific shooting at the Islamic Center of San Diego. Worshippers entered a house of God and were met with gunfire. Innocent lives were taken, and a sacred space was violated.

إِنَّا لِلَّٰهِ وَإِنَّا إِلَيْهِ رَاجِعُونَ

To the families mourning tonight, to the wounded, and to every child whose sense of safety has been shattered—we grieve with you. Your loss will not be forgotten.
We condemn this attack unequivocally and urge authorities to investigate and prosecute it as the hate crime it is.

This violence reflects a broader climate. CAIR’s latest Civil Rights Report recorded the highest number of anti‑Muslim bias incidents in its history, over 8,000 in a single year; driven in part by dehumanizing rhetoric from public figures who portray Muslim Americans as outsiders in their own country.

Let us be clear: when leaders demonize Muslims, they help create the conditions for violence. Words become bullets. Rhetoric becomes funerals. Those who spread anti‑Muslim hate must be held accountable: by their communities, their colleagues, and by history.

Houses of worship are guaranteed sanctuaries under the First Amendment. This is not a privilege; it is a right.

San Diego, you are not alone. Keep the victims and their families in your du’as.
