Soapbox, Inc. Speakers Who Speak Out Soapbox is a platform for feminism in action! Soapbox, Inc.

was founded by author/activists Amy Richards and Jennifer Baumgardner in 2002, after two years spent on the road touring in support of their first book Manifesta: Young Women, Feminism, and the Future. In the decade since, Soapbox has expanded to represent dozens of authors, speakers, scholars, and artists at the forefront of feminism. A hub for modern politics, Soapbox also runs the Winter and Summer Feminist Book Camps in New York City, the only feminist immersion programs in the country.

Meet Jennifer Baumgardner! She is a writer, activist, filmmaker, and publisher whose work focuses on sexual violence and scapegoating, abortion, bisexuality, and radical children’s literature.She’s been an editor at Ms. and a features writer for The Nation, Harper’s, Glamour, Harper’s Bazaar, Teen Vogue, More and Elle (among others). With Amy Richards, she co-founded Soapbox Inc. and Feminist Camp.

In 2005, she co-created the award-winning documentary I Had an Abortion (with Gillian Aldrich). In 2013, she directed her second film, It Was R**e.

From 2008-2012, she was writer in residence at The New School, where she taught non fiction workshops and produced activist events. From 2013-2017, Jennifer served as the executive director and publisher of the Feminist Press, the oldest and longest running women’s press in the world. She is the publisher of Dottir Press and the current editor in chief of the Women’s Review of Books.

A professor at Tulane University, Lisa previously earned an M.A. in Human S*xuality from NYU and a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. In addition to authoring over two dozen research papers, book chapters, and educational essays, she is the co-author of the bestselling textbook Gender: Ideas, Interactions, Institutions and the founder of and primary writer for the award-winning website Sociological Images.

This is Julie F Kay! Kay began her legal career as a Staff at the Center for Reproductive Rights, litigating domestic reproductive rights cases nationwide on behalf of individual women and health care providers. She served as the inaugural Senior Strategist for Advocacy and Policy at the Ms. Foundation for Women creating coalitions to advance innovative national and grassroots gender equality initiatives.  Prior to that as a Senior Staff Attorney at Legal Momentum (formerly the NOW Legal Defense and Education Fund), she designed and launched the organization’s S*xuality and Family Rights Program. She served as a founding President of Women’s Link Worldwide, and as a long-time board member for the Center for Constitutional Rights.

As the lead attorney who designed and litigated the landmark case ABC v. Ireland, Kay successfully argued before the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights that Ireland’s ban on life-saving abortion violated her client’s human rights. Kay’s legal work with the Irish Family Planning Association is credited with playing a vital role in abortion legalization in Ireland.

This is ! Ms. Faye is a Partner with Buffkin/Baker in New York. Ms. Faye’s distinguished career spans more than three decades, during which she has amassed an extraordinary track record for leadership, both as a CEO of national not-for-profit organizations and serving on the boards of public and private corporations, academic institutions and high-impact philanthropic organizations.

From 1978 to 1992, Faye was President and CEO of the nation’s oldest and largest voluntary reproductive health provider, Planned Parenthood Federation of America (PPFA). She was the youngest, first woman, and first African American to hold this position. At the time of her departure, a restructured Planned Parenthood had grown to become the nation’s seventh largest nonprofit organization, with an aggregate budget of $500 million, providing medical and educational services to four million Americans each year, through 170 affiliates operating in 49 states and the District of Columbia. Under its international arm, known as Family Planning International Assistance, PPFA provided technical assistance and commodities to organizations in dozens of developing countries.

Some good news this Pride Month… NYU Rory Meyers College of Nursing will be offering a course available to all students on LGBTQ+ health! It will be taught by Jeff Day, a nurse practitioner at Mt. Sinai’s Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery.

Students have been pushing for coursework like this for years. The gender-affirming course will include topics like LGBTQ+ health (physical, mental, and more), government policies,

Brilliant author, lawyer and speaker Kathryn Kolbert spoke on about the leaked early draft of the Supreme Court’s majority opinion overturning the federal right to an abortion.

In 1992, Kathryn argued in Planned Parenthood of Southeastern Pennsylvania v. Casey. That was the last major case that challenged the right to an abortion.
