One of our PSR/NY leaders - Dr. Cathey Falvo - speaking at the UN on the public health approach to gun violence prevention. Thanks, Dr. Falvo!
Medical professionals are tasked with treating countless gunshot wounds, and witness up close the horrific deaths and injuries that result from gun violence. Yet, there are many areas in which the public health community can work with government agencies to reduce the terrible human and monetary costs of illicit gun use, physician Cathey Falvo of IPPNW and IANSA told member states today at a United Nations conference on small arms.
"One of them is action-oriented research. For example, we can apply the public health model used to diminish or eradicate other public health crises such as automobile injuries in the global North or the recent epidemic of Ebola virus in Western Africa," Dr. Falvo pointed out. The epidemic of intentional gun violence can be reversed with a science based approach, she added, but we need to implement the science and not let political barriers stand in our way.
The public health model involves four steps. See them here in Dr. Falvo's full statement:http://reachingcriticalwill.org/images/documents/Disarmament-fora/salw/prepcom2018/statements/21March_IPPNW.pdf
