Rema Hort Mann Fund

Rema Hort Mann Fund Rema Hort Mann Fund is a nonprofit that supports cancer patients & champions emerging artists.

Rema Hort Mann Fund (RHMF) was created in September 1995 by friends and family of Rema Hort Mann to honor her joyful and vivacious life after her untimely death from stomach cancer at age 30. RHMF was conceived and created around a kitchen table with the intent to celebrate Rema’s life and sustain her spirit. Through the efforts of friends and supporters, RHMF has evolved into a dynamic and effect

ive organization, acting as an advocate for emerging artists and a bedrock of support for individuals suffering from cancer. To carry out these goals, we offer unrestricted grants and community-based grants, by nomination only, to promising emerging artists who demonstrate an ability and commitment to making substantial contributions in the arts. We inspire cancer patients undergoing treatment by providing grants for travel, accommodations, child care and related expenses to help strengthen their emotional and familial support. We have expanded our work to include three major grant programs established in both Los Angeles and New York City. It is our way of commemorating Rema’s life and upholding the passions closest to her heart.

We are honored to receive an award recognizing our support for cancer equity, health, and education from the Community Outreach and Engagement team at Mount Sinai Tisch Cancer Center on World Cancer Day.
RHMF Board Member, MD, and cancer survivor Dr. David Biro accepted the award on our behalf. His words offered something for all of us to hold onto as we continue our work—ensuring that no one is alone during treatment and that loved ones remain connected when it matters most.
Many thanks to Allison Snow, PhD, MSW, OSW-C, Senior Director of Oncology Social Work and Cancer Supportive Services at Mount Sinai Health System and an RHMF Cancer Committee member, for organizing such a thoughtful and impactful day-long event.

is an artist whose work explores intimacy, reciprocity, and shared care across cultural and personal boundaries. Moving between Chinese and U.S. contexts, Liu creates participatory installations and performances that transform everyday encounters into spaces of connection. At Skowhegan, she crafted Can we share some time together?, a work using human hair spun into a broom to brush the audience while haircut conversations played, making tangible the tenderness of touch and trust. Other projects, like Are you from China? and Crystal Bubble Palace, playfully navigate identity, displacement, and fantasy through gestures of humor and empathy. Across works that span from cooking exchanges to collaborative photo projects, Liu reassigns agency and reveals the subtle dynamics of relationships, enacting Audre Lorde’s notion of the erotic as power to nurture collective care and possibility.

Sidian Liu has been recognized by the Rema Hort Mann Fund as a talented emerging artist, we look forward to seeing the next steps she takes in her career.

RHMF congratulates and 2015 RHMF alum on receiving a 2026 Guggenheim Fellowship, awarded to individuals with exceptional creative ability in the arts. Since 1935, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation has recognized those with distinguished achievement and extraordinary promise.

Sheida created a Peter’s Guardian Angel for RHMF—a powerful reminder that no one is alone in their experience with cancer. Her work continues to examine the intersections of power, environmental crisis, queerness, migration, and care.

We also celebrate RHMF alum (2015) Leeza Meksin on receiving this honor. A New York–based interdisciplinary artist, Leeza’s work spans painting, installation, public art, and multiples, exploring the relationships between architecture, the body, and space.
Congratulations to both artists on this well-deserved recognition.

(b. Waxahachie, TX) creates vibrant abstract sculptures and paintings that reclaim agency, visibility, and joy through color, form, texture, and found materials. She transforms discarded and embedded objects into caring acts of resistance and preserved memory. Influenced by her Hispanic and Indigenous lineage, alongside formative experiences within fundamentalist religious institutions, her works are insistent on hope and repair––monuments for joy, care, and belonging.

.vidal.l is an artist who currently resides between New York and Mexico City. The elements of nature that appear in Vidal’s large-scale paintings emerge from catastrophe. Fires and floods intermingle with a vast visual repertoire that incorporates autobiography, biblical scenes, cave paintings, golem-like figures, mythological references, and something long foretold that has yet to happen.

is a large-format film photographer, filmmaker, screenprinter, lithographer, welder, sculptor, woodworker and storyteller.

“In high school I started taking photographs of reflections, patterns, buildings, lines, symmetry. At CalArts, my mentor suggested I rephotograph someone’s work. I began rephotographing Eugène Atget using large-format film. Then I did things my way. I created kaleidoscopes—reflections, patterns. […] I want children with Down syndrome to get a good education like me.I see things other people don’t see. I make art other people cannot make.” - Rachel Handlin
