NYC Chapter - American Guild of Organists

NYC Chapter - American Guild of Organists The page of the New York City Chapter of The American Guild of Organists (NYC AGO). We are particularly proud of our NYC Organ Project pages.

Welcome to the New York City Chapter of The American Guild of Organists! This Chapter is not just open to New York City organists, but also organ enthusiasts and musicians from around the country who want to keep in touch with what’s happening with organ music in the City. Our Presidents’ Day conference and other programs often draw audiences from the Metropolitan region and beyond. Besides its ow

n performance, education, and social activities, the Chapter hosts AGO Professional Certification exams, local and regional competitions for young organists, the Centennial Millennium Fund, a grant-making body, and more! At the link above, you may find specifications, photos, and histories for many of our city’s pipe organs, past and present, and learn about the buildings that house them. If you are not already a member of Chapter, we cordially invite you to join up. Enjoy your visit to the site! Please visit our website, www.nycago.org for more information.

Our annual Presidents' Day Conference is two weeks away, on Monday, February 16! As we have done the last few years, the conference is free of charge to all and no registration is required.

This year we'll head to the Church of St. Mary the Virgin (Episcopal), 145 West 46th Street (between 6th and 7th Avenues), home to one of the finest organs and acoustics in the city! The conference schedule is as follows:

12:30 pm: Opening Recital by Bradley Hunter Welch

1:30 pm: Organ Demonstration and Church Tour by our host, David Hurd

2:15 pm: Break

2:30 pm: Presentation: The Life and Times of Calvin Hampton by Maks Adach

3:30 pm: Break

4:00 pm: Closing Recital by Damin Spritzer

The organ is Aeolian Skinner opus 391 (1932, IV/92), revised first in 1942 and later by Mann and Trupiano between 1988 and 2002, and has a distinctive appearance due to its lack of a case (the Great Depression meant that funds for the planned case dried up).
