“In a digital age where social media is the epitome of fragmentation, I thought perhaps collage—and its intrinsic link to poetry—could be just the thing the next generation needs.”

New in the magazine: Drawing on Dadaist influences of found materials and chance, Anna Schwartzman shows her students that writing poetry is an act of discovery by teaching them to make their own collage poems. Read “Out of Ashes / Creating / the / Atmosphere: Teaching Found Poetry in the Age of Attention” in the magazine: https://teachersandwritersmagazine.org/out-of-ashes-creating-the-atmosphere/

"I am writing because they told me to never start a sentence with because. But I wasn't trying to make a sentence—I was trying to break free. Because freedom, I am told, is nothing but the distance between the hunter and its prey." — Ocean Vuong, On Earth We're Briefly Gorgeous

“Orwell’s world was one in which language was wobbly, the meaning of words often reversed to make contradictory concepts both appear true. It was a world where even private thought carried danger.”

New in the magazine: As a biology major assigned to read and respond to George Orwell’s 1984, Jhazzel Timothy Dumlao thought the dystopian novel would confirm what he already knew about how the world works. Instead, through an unexpected creative writing assignment, he learned about the power of language and how freedom is lived. Read “Living Inside the Questions: Writing About Freedom When Language Is Under Watch” in the magazine: https://teachersandwritersmagazine.org/living-inside-the-questions/

"Maybe I am staring into a piece of paper like it is a pond, hoping one day that what looks back is not my own reflection, but my great-grandmother's face. Maybe poetry is the distance between my face and her face." — Victoria Chang, Dear Memory: Letters on Writing, Silence and Grief

Congratulations to T&W teaching artist Nkosi Nkululeko on the publication of his new chapbook CORRESPONDING SQUARES, out now with Brooklyn and Queens-based press Nothing to Say!

“In his latest chapbook, Nkosi Nkululeko finds unexpected harmony between chess and poetry. His square poems, which read both left-to-right and top-to-bottom, are breathtaking feats of ingenuity—yet despite their technical brilliance, they never lose sight of the poetry that matters most. You don’t need to be a chess player to find Corresponding Squares worth reading, reading, and reading again.”
