Rest in peace, Johnny and Matty Gaudreau. All day, I’ve been at a loss for words for the tragic event that happened last night to 2 of the hockey world’s best people. We all knew these 2 in different ways, some personally, some professionally, some just from being around the rink. One thing we all knew was how the impact they made on the hockey world, and how much they will be missed by all, especially by those of us in the hockey community.
I met Johnny in 2016, and from the very start, he was nothing but supportive and inspired by our foundations philanthropic efforts. He believed in change, and diversity within the sport of ice hockey. Equality for all. He came from a hard working and good family of people. His support of our efforts, even just vocalizing his thoughts for us to share, was the beginning of getting our efforts on the map. From there, we had a tremendous amount of supporters that helped us spread the word, ultimately leading to our partnership with the New York islanders and UBS. This partnership helped us to grow from 6 players to now over 170 families nationwide. That started with Johnnys support. He was always there to help, many different charities, and always there to be a friend or sign an autograph. He encapsulated what it meant to be a superstar athlete, yet maintaining humility and a genuine demeanor. A role model that you would want your child to look up to.
The world lost 2 great people today. We can’t change that part. But what I can assure you of, is that we will all appreciate the little moments in life just a little more. We will all hug those we love a little tighter today. And every-time we step on that ice, we will skate a little harder with gratitude and Johnny and Matty on our mind.
Thank you my friend. I wish we had more time to commute to build our friendship. But I’m grateful for the time I did get to share with you, and honored to have stand shoulder to shoulder with you for a puck drop. We will see you at the rink in heaven, where all hockey players go. Rest easy, brother.
