YaleNYC Writing Workshop | Doors to Worlds: The Art of the First Sentence

Do you want to craft a first sentence that casts a spell on your readers? On Saturday, April 11, join writer Baylina Pu ‘23 for an interactive webinar on what’s often the most memorable part of a story: the beginning.

Whether a sentence lunges, screams, or quietly pulls the reader in, a great opening is what captures and holds attention. In this workshop, Baylina will dive into the mechanics of unforgettable first lines. You’ll leave not just with new techniques, but with a personal bank of opening sentences to serve as springboards for your next big writing project. Whether you’re a seasoned writer or just looking for a creative spark, come ready to open some doors!

✨ Catching everyone up on pre-Thanksgiving activities…we (Shawn Garrett, Bryce Hwang, and Christian Martinez Contreras) represented YaleNYC at Yale’s annual Assembly & Convocation—a gathering of alumni leaders from across classes, regions, SIGs, and schools. Representing the interests of 17,000 Yalies across NYC and Long Island, we left energized and full of ideas for strengthening our community.

We kicked things off Wednesday night at Mory’s, where Christian joined a special dinner organized by Brian Hoefling (ES ’12) for leaders from the major metropolitan alumni clubs—an informal revival of the “Major Cities Summit” focused on shared challenges, best practices, and supporting the world’s largest alumni regions.

The following evening, we returned to Mory’s for a session organized by Brad Gailette (Vice President, Yale Club of Hartford), bringing together “centennial” regional Yale clubs to explore how alumni organizations can better research and understand their histories—including creative approaches like using AI to comb historical archives. It was inspiring to see how deeply these clubs honor their roots, especially as YaleNYC celebrates 155 years of alumni community in New York.

Throughout Assembly, we attended plenary sessions with President McInnis and Yale Trustees, Best Practices Workshops, cohort meetings, the Tsai CITY Student Showcase, and the Volunteer Leaders Awards Ceremony. We also joined a thought-provoking conversation with Yale’s Committee on Trust in Higher Education about public perceptions of universities and how institutions can strengthen trust today. We happily paid visits to , , and the recently renovated , too!

We’re excited to bring everything we learned back to NYC—supporting local groups, growing civic-minded initiatives, and creating more ways for Yalies to connect with each other. 💙🐾
