Join Mi Casa Resiste TODAY!! September 18 at Mayday Space for a screening of SQUATTERS and a fundraiser for local street vendors in Bushwick and Ridgewood.
Street vendors are vital to our Bushwick-Ridgewood neighborhoods, providing affordable food, goods and culture to our community. Despite this, they continue to face state violence in the forms of policing, financial penalties, and theft in the name of “confiscation.”
These acts of state violence attack our neighbors’ abilities to provide for themselves and their people and we ask for folks to stand with our neighbors in solidarity against the state.
We are raising money for our local street vendor defense project, one aspect of which is legal support. The project sometimes helps local vendors pay fines and replace goods and equipment lost through state violence.
For the fundraiser, we’ll be screening SQUATTERS, a documentary about two Lower East Side squats in the 1980s that tenants built and then fought to keep, despite police and government efforts to clear and re-privatize formerly abandoned buildings and public spaces at the end of the decade.
From the Lower East Side of the 1980s to Bushwick and Ridgewood today, struggles over housing, work, and public space show how working people have fought to remain in and shape the neighborhoods they call home, asking us to consider how we can fight for ourselves and our neighbors when faced with similar conditions of neglect and expulsion due to capitalist colonizer exploitation.
We’ll also be joined by the Ridgewood Tenants Union and the Bushwick Housing Independence Project to share resources and join a broader conversation about tenant organizing, displacement, public space, and neighborhood change.
