Last Friday night, the Art Students League transformed into the Dream Ball: Circus of Wonder, welcoming guests for an unforgettable evening of spectacle and surprise. Inspired by League alumnus Alexander Calder’s legendary Circus performances, our studios came alive with carnival games, whimsical sideshows, and balloons galore.

Immersive experiences invited attendees to step inside circus tents, test their luck at games of chance, have their fortunes told through tarot readings, sample hallucinogenic-inspired beverages, receive outrageous clown makeovers, and much more.

The Dream Ball helps keep high-caliber art education accessible to everyone who walks through our doors. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s event a success!

Join us for an oil painting portrait competition on Sunday, June 28 from 10am – 5pm! Participants will work on canvases no larger than 16 x 20 inches and compete for cash prizes up to $2,000. Models will hold a single pose for five hours (breaking every 20 minutes for 5 minutes).

The final portraits will be judged blindly by distinguished artists Jules Arthur, Luis Alvarez Roure, and Sharon Sprung. Participants may sell their works to the viewing public at no commission following the awards announcement.

This event is officially sold out, but stay tuned for announcements on our next events!

Enter a Circus of Wonder on Friday, May 29, at this year’s Dream Ball! SWIPE to see all the amazing performers you’ll meet in this evening of entertainments and eccentricities!

Applications are now open for Works in Public, the League’s fully-funded program that invites artists to conceive of, create, and install site-specific sculptures.

Selected artists must commit to taking classes at the League during their participation in the 2-year program. A successful application is based on the strength of the proposed concept and portfolio. Artists working in all media are invited to apply.

Deadline for submissions is July 12, 2026, 11:59 PM EDT. See our link in bio for more info and the online application form.

Join us for a plein-air painting retreat in the north of Portugal, where the winding streets and sweeping vistas of Porto become your open-air studio. It’s a painter’s dream and a daily spectacle. Porto’s roads can be steep, so pack a light, portable painting kit and comfortable walking shoes.

We’ll paint each day from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., exploring sunlit hilly neighborhoods, palatial gardens, dramatic overlook points, and riverside scenes in the Ribeira district. Gregg Kreutz will demonstrate approaches to painting with immediacy—translating shifting light and shadow into dynamic color relationships and confidently navigating the challenges of perspective in a city built on layers.

Over 100 years since abstract painting emerged, how can one hope to innovate; to avoid repetition? The perspective in this class is that through deeper engagement with visual structures and meaning in one’s own work and in the art of the past, we might discover ways forward.

Working with each student’s goals, experience and artistic influences, students will develop skills in becoming both more experimental and analytical in response to their own and other works of art.

Projects will encourage new ways to consider color, form, scale, pictorial forces and structure and will encourage personal experimentation in developing an increasingly vital painting process.
