Study directly from the Old Masters inside one of the world’s most iconic museums. In this rare, hands-on workshop at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Ricky Mujica guides artists through the time-honored practice of copying masterworks. Participants select a painting of their choice, research its history and techniques, and recreate it on-site while learning classical oil methods, limited-palette color mixing, and refined hand-eye coordination.⁠

This workshop requires applications by August 31, 2026. Early applicants are given priority for selecting their painting, and based on experience, the instructor may suggest alternative works to copy.⁠

Our latest online workshop, “Physical Computing: Arduino Basics for Artists,” is now open for registration.⁠

Instructor Taezoo Park (Taezoo Park) will walk you through the basics of open-source electronics platform Arduino, which will allow you to explore how interactive systems can be built through sensors, circuits, and basic programming logic.⁠
⁠
The workshop will focus on how computational systems can function as artistic media. No prior experience with coding, electronics, or Arduino is required. While designers are welcome, the course is primarily geared toward artists exploring installation, sculpture, performance, and participatory work.⁠

A look at our 2026 Portrait Painting Competition, which took place on Sunday, June 28, in our painting studios.

Participants began with blank canvases, and after an intense day of painting, submitted their finished works for review. All portraits were judged blindly by our distinguished panel of artists Sharon Sprung, Jules Arthur, and Luis Alvarez Roure.

Last Friday night, the Art Students League transformed into the Dream Ball: Circus of Wonder, welcoming guests for an unforgettable evening of spectacle and surprise. Inspired by League alumnus Alexander Calder’s legendary Circus performances, our studios came alive with carnival games, whimsical sideshows, and balloons galore.

Immersive experiences invited attendees to step inside circus tents, test their luck at games of chance, have their fortunes told through tarot readings, sample hallucinogenic-inspired beverages, receive outrageous clown makeovers, and much more.

The Dream Ball helps keep high-caliber art education accessible to everyone who walks through our doors. Thank you to everyone who helped make this year’s event a success!

Dream Ball 2026: The Circus of Wonder is this Friday, May 29 — see you there!

Join us for an oil painting portrait competition on Sunday, June 28 from 10am – 5pm! Participants will work on canvases no larger than 16 x 20 inches and compete for cash prizes up to $2,000. Models will hold a single pose for five hours (breaking every 20 minutes for 5 minutes).

The final portraits will be judged blindly by distinguished artists Jules Arthur, Luis Alvarez Roure, and Sharon Sprung. Participants may sell their works to the viewing public at no commission following the awards announcement.

This event is officially sold out, but stay tuned for announcements on our next events!
