Da Urban Butterflies (D.U.B) Young Women's Leadership Project was formed by youth (ages 13-25) on October 2004. DUB aims to contribute in the leadership development, capacity building, and the personal and collective empowerment of the youth in Washington Heights, and the New York City community as a whole. D.U.B, since its inception has supported local and international campaigns of people and na
tions in the struggle everywhere to achieve empowerment, peace with justice and liberation in all its dimensions-personal, social, political, economic, and religious. D.U.B provides youth in the community, particularly young women of color, with a safe space to explore our identities, our personal stories, and the HERS/histories of our people and their struggles for equality and justice. In our process of educating self, we also seek to create a positive impact in our community. From the people’s HER/histories of struggle in marginalized communities, we learn to strategize and find creative solutions using social media, art expressions, education, and organizing skills to address present issues related to immigrant rights, LGBTQ rights, youth empowerment and activism, and women’s rights amongst other struggles towards justice. D.U.B offers a physical space for youth to meet and create long lasting healthy relationships and support networks amongst the youth, as well as intergenerational support. DUB is active in promoting and creating alternatives that will advance the processes to achieve peace with justice, NOW. We firmly believe that the youth are our community’s most valuable resource, and the youth's talents should be valued and nourished with the purpose of strengthening self and the community. Our goal is to educate, build community, organize and mobilize our communities to take actions that will bring systematic changes in our society. UPDATED: AUGUST 2010
